I'm woundering what some of the pros here think I should keep in mind while taking my photographs. I was hoping for my latest entry to get a 6 but it just fell short. Not complaining just asking for some comments.
Thanks! |

I don't see anythiung specific "holding the image back" except possibly the way it comes out of the wall/BG so artificially. There's an overall softness/haziness to it that might be seen as a "flaw" by some, but it ties in perfectly with the backlit, high-key "alien" genre that this image is playing homage to, so there's no changing that. You may have found your high-water mark with this one, balancing precisely between those whoi love sharpness and those who live & breathe aliens.

I didn't vote on this challenge, but this is a really neat image! I would have given it a 7 or so myself if I were voting...
One reason it might have missed a higher score is that it's not as sharp and clear as some of the more highly rated pictures are. It's usually nice if there is one nice sharp area, with great clarity, for the eye to settle on... otherwise the eye keeps wandering without finding a focus point.
That said, there are pictures that can do without this... this might be one of those.

First of all I am not a 'pro', whatever that is.
But I have an opinion, and here it is. What you have created is something people have to think about. It's not a 'pretty' image. It's something to be interpreted. It's something that invites you into a world to explore and use your own imagination. Not many people will bother to think.
It's not a great image and it fails to display a few major things on the checklist a lot of voters carry. But yes, I think it's certaintly worthy of at least a six. But, you can't help it.
Avg (commenters): 7.733 - some people did have a few things to say about it and did find it interesting. You just falied to impress the majority. That's all.
And if I can say what you should keep in mind - If you are after scores, do something along the lines of what scores well on DPC. If you are trying to express your vision, have a clear idea of what you are trying to show and the different ways you can do it. Do a few and pick the one which you think is the strongest in conveying your message. Ask yourself why you are doing it in the first place.
And yeah, I liked it and scored it a 7. |

I love monochromes. Like bear said, if it was more fluid in the way it came out of the wall it may have done better (would've been more "fantasy" like). |

I gave it a 9, along with 3 others.
I've not yet given out a 10. 5.5 is my average vote (of course, I've only been a member for about a week, and only voted on 800-some images), so I guess you could say I was pretty impressed by your photo. Sorry to hear you didn't break six.

I didn't vote on this challenge, but it looks like you came up with a good shot with a few weaknesses. The biggest one IMO, is that the hand is so obviously artificial. The low angle and wide angle distortion are your primary assets here, and add the only real interest for me. Otherwise, it's a centered image of fake hand coming out of a surface.
For this challenge, the more surreal the better, and maybe you just didn't take it far enough. With such a good prop, you might have tried other situations or lighting setups to distract viewers and/or hide the "fake" aspect. Paint the hand flourescent colors and shoot it under a blacklight. Have the hand emerging from a cracked watermelon "egg." Paint it to match tree bark and attach it to an oak... anything that creates a more imaginary scene would work.
You might find some useful tips in THIS thread. |
