is it adjustable? Doesn't make much sense the way it's set up in that picture. Pretty neat all the same. |

Is that a slave flash or an external flash attachment? The distinction being that a true slave flash unit works as a subordinate to a master flash unit, the master telling the slave when to fire with the signal usually travelling by infra-red like a remote, and both master and slave fire at once. Whereas an external flash usually couples to the camera via a hotshoe, or a cable, and replaces the onboard flash.
I may be wrong on this point but I am just trying to see the terms used correctly.

NO.
It's a high power slave. It is completely unconnected to the camera and fires when it detects the main camera flash itself.
It has three power settings (Min, Mid and Max) and also manual (fired using a button on the back) and auto (fires when main flash is detected).
I have one in front of me right now!

Thanks for that correction Rich. Am I correct to assume that it will work with any flash as it's master?

I think that the good ones are still in the 500$+ (cdn) and that more and more El-Cheapos are getting introduced in the line-ups, I say a 3.2mp canon p&s yesterday at 269$cdn. and a 2.0 from some bizarre company @ 99$ ! |

Yes, it's simply a matter of the flash detecting the camera's flash so any one will work. However I believe this is optimised for Canon cameras and MAY automatically ignore pre-flash on Canon only. Although I suspect it'll ignore any pre-flash cos it'll just be a matter of tweaking the sensitivity of the sensor. |

I thought the pre-flash was used for metering. So wouldn't the slave have to als send a pre-flash so the camera's metering works correctly? |

Nope.
This flash is very basic and has no ability to meter or take metering commands from cameras. If the exposure is too high or low you have the option of Min, Mid and Max power settings - that's it.
Very simple and compact slave triggered solely by detecting the main camera's flash. |

SORRY TO ALL!! I'M COMPLETELY WRONG!!!
This is actually correct:
1)The flash DOES meter the scene.
2)It has power adjustment for tweaking according to the aperture you're using because it doesn't receive data from the main unit.
3)It does ignore pre-flash if it is less than 150ms from main flash and therefore will also work with non-Canon.
4)The manual option on the flash must be held down whilst shooting. This is to avoid the flash being set off by other people's flashes at weddings etc.
5) It is fired when it detects the main flash from the main camera.
All in all it's not as simple as it seems - actually quite crafty and very useful.
Please don't ignore my comments in future - I was just wrong about this one! :-) |

Looks like the Metz 28 CS-2 Digital Slave Flash.
