I have noticed I have 170+ photographs of mine chosen as favorites, but only 27 as photographer. People here like my photographs but not me as a photographer. What do I lack ? A personal style which can identify me ?
I am asking this because at this point, I don't know where am I headed do, what I like doing or what I should be doing...
any suggestions based on what you see in my profile/portfolio is very much appreciated.
thanks,
Gaurawa

Maybe each of those 27 chose several of your photos as favorites.. .
Also, I have chosen several pictures as favorites, but not necessarily the photog. I like the individual picture, but that doesn't mean that everything that photog does appeals to me. |

Those are pretty darn good numbers if you ask me!
I'd guess that a lot of people just like one or two of your photos but not all? Beats me?
I only mark a photog as favorite when I consistently like just about everything they put up.

I've admired your images many times. I have very few favorites because it takes time to go to the profile and "get to know" the photographer, and I'm lazy.
However, I did check you out and made you one of my favorites. And don't feel bad about your 27. I only have 2.
Cheers!

Obviously, you don't lack much! Your portfolio is beautiful, and 170 people have chosen your photographs as favorites!
On the other hand, I do understand your question about discrepencies between the two. I have to admit that I've only ever chosen one photographer as a favorite, but many photographs. (I'm relatively new here - I expect to add to that!) To me, that photographer is consistently beautiful, and they do seem to have their own style that ensures that their portfolio will always be worth checking out.
BTW, I added your "Band of Brothers" photograph to my favorites as well!
edited to include name of photograph

Thanks for your replies...
What I interpreted from Karmat's reply is "Only few ppl like many of my photographs, so I am catering to the tastes of these few ppl only"
From louddog's reply "More people like only a few of photos, so not the photographer as a whole"
These two I believe are very different aspects. Now I am nore confused :D

Thanks Roxanne. Its not about feeling bad, but am asking what I need to do next in my photography. I have tried a lot of things in my 1yr of active participation at dpchallenge and now am thinking hwere to go. |

Perhaps this is too vague, but I'd say "Follow your heart."

sometimes I mark a photographer as a favorite because I like their work. And, I mark particular photos by the same photographer for handy reference. That way I don't have to go through their portfolio.
Sometimes I mark a photo as a favorite because it wows me. Other times because I love the technique, the subject, or the composition.
There is no relation between the two. But usually, if I mark quite a few photos as a favorite, I will add the photog so I have quick access to their portfolio.
I just recently found out I could have up to 500 favorites so my numbers are going up. :)
Don't think I've gone through yours yet but I'll get there eventually. :)

170+ photographs of mine chosen as favorites, but only 27 as photographer
Hey, if people don't like you they must completely hate me.
As near as I can tell you are doing things to get recognized that I am not- either that or people really do hate me (but I am a nice guy- ask my mommy). You're participating in contests (something I haven't found time to do yet), staying active and building a really nice portfolio. 170 images as favorites is really impressive- does anyone have many more than that?

I am a favorite photographer of 61 people, and individual photographs of mine have been chosen as favorites 119 times. In other words, if ONLY those who have me listed as a favorite photographer had selected individual images as favorite images, then each person who named me as a favoprite photographer would have identified just under two images as favorite images. And anyway that's clearly not the case, as off the top of my list I can find half a dozen images that are marked as favorites by people who do NOT have me as a favorite photographer.
In my particular case, 50 of my images have been chosen as favorites by one or more people.
So what does this mean? To you? Nothing, really, except that you can break the numbers down and look at them different ways. One of the most interesting breakdowns would be, which of your images have been listed as a favorite the most times? In my case virtually all of mine are 1 or 2 seelctions except my two highest scoring images, ansel and minimalism, with 19 and 20 respectively. Next best is my ill-fated construction image, "Pat and Jilly", with 4. To me, this is an interesting statistic, telling me that by and large my images (beyond the ones that make the "front page" in challenges) don't attract a lot of attention, but as a photographer/personality I attract a fair amount of attention.
In other words, I'm not that "appealing" graphically, my images aren't in-your-face gorgeous or bold or whatever, but I garner a certain amount of "respect", whatever that amounts to here.
With your numbers flopped the other way, I'd say off the top of my head that as an individual you don't attract a lot of attention, but your work is very appealing to people. That's my take on it anyway, speaking very generally.
Robt.

64 photos
11 as photog
--long, long way to go.
I'll admit, also, to checking a favorite photog for all of the following reasons:
1. I love your work
2. I want to keep an eye on you in case you improve
3. I want to be able to find you easily because: a. you live near me or b. you're going to DC in July
4. You said something that impressed me and when I'm bored I'll check your profile to see what threads you've recently been active in
5. You said something nice about me and one day I may want to return the favor
6. I once thought you were a complete nincompoop and I'll check back to see if I still think so at some other time
(#6 is my guess why I've been chosen as much as I have--so if you think I'm a complete nincompoop, favorite me! =p) |

I've been selected 7 times as a favourite photographer, and with my average score I'm surprised it's that high.
My photos have been selected 71 times as favourites, but out of those 39 have been for the same photo. I'm not sure any others have been selected more than twice.

You bring up a good point, my Photos selected actually only total 19. Multiple selections of the same photo bring that score up. |

10 people have selected photos of mine as favorites, ranging from those whom I personally consider it an honor to have been noticed by to those I know nothing about other than a name in the favorites list. Some interesting statistics; each individual has selected one and only one photo to favorite; these ten favorites are spread, very unevenly amoung 3 images. All I know for sure is that something about the images made an impact on them -- very few of them told me what that impact was, most didn't comment on the image they selected.
3 people have selected me as a favorite photographer, and while they have not told me what I did to warrant such a boon, each was after having interacted with them personally in the forums or by pm. I am fairly certain that my photography had nothing to do with them selecting me as a favorite photographer. Also worth noting is that none of them have selected a photo of mine as a favorite.
What conclusions do I draw from this -- nothing! I like images and people for reasons that are my own and expect others do as well. I am quite content knowing I've made an impact on another, knowing the reason is not important.
It may sound strange, but it may not have anything to do with me at all -- after all, the why behind them liking something is personal to them, but may not be of any importance to me and may in fact be something I know nothing of.
