Someone with a religious message usurped most channels minus a couple of network stations. Even PBS. Satellite hijack?

Bleeeeeeeeeeeeeep. This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission.

I went down to watch Yankees with Hubby.
I live in NY State.
Typical "alert" tone comes on just after Jeter is walked.
But it's not the typical alert...there's a voice-over from right-wing fundamentalists with some osrt of freedom of???? message
Then, next time, they got our Channel 5...not affected in first message...just a voice over

Isn't that how a lot of Alien invasion type films start?

Probably cell phone interference.

Maybe a War of the Worlds commercial?

Naaaaa....sorry about that, I was adjusting something on my XM satalite transmitter/receiver and bloohy, I had control of a few television stations for a while.

Sorry about that, it's safe to go back to doing what you were doing.

In other words, hit cable and some network channels first
Then other network channels
My guess is someone figured out how to hack something.

When the first message came on--at an inopportune moment (the Yankee channel would never time it that way)--hubby cruised channels....ALL THE Messages were the SAME! This never actually happens on alerts.

20 years ago, the networks, but especially radio, had to all broadcast the same message at the same time.

Now, that's not the case.

They can broadcast their "tests" at their convenience.

AND, they can provide their own screen for the test.

THESE WERE all the SAME screen!

All the same message....

Somebody hacked something out here. Or out there.

"We are the World" was broadcast simultaneous on all radio stations.

what exactly did you hear, word for word? And do you know if anyone else caught it?

Well hubby witnessed it....in part, since it started after Jeter was walked. He came back to the room and I just told him I didn't touch the remote.

He flipped channels. The message was being broadcast in-sync across channels...but a couple of channels were unaffected.

As for the message...I'll have to remember...definitely right-wing Christian..freedom,,,compromise...

Then I came upstairs to see what was up....anyone else here see it?

Started this post.

Got an update from hubby that the original broadcast restarted including one of the missed channels.

Doing a quick dogpile on it...it would appear that every one in the world knows how unsecure the EAS (Emergency Alert System) replacement for the Emergency Broadcast System is...and they have known back to 2002.

Sheesh...

Nothing on your incident though...

Ahh, well, must be it never happened.
The local News at 10 - first with the news (last with the news?) doesn't even hint at it.

I know what I saw.

It was kinda scary (though not unexpected) to see the cable broadcast "taken over" ...however briefly. And then to see them taken over again..second round got a few others. My guess? Someone got into the satellite transmissions.

My second guess? This is so embarrassing to the TV stations and those who host them that they'll try to sweep it under the rug.

My fear? I don't know. It's kinda creepy that someone would be able to simultaneously broadcast a message to people watching tv. It's not that we could actually understand this particular message (it seemed to start in the middle of an idea...and the shock of it no being the usual emergency message probably closed my ears a bit). It's that, just like "Max Headroom", someone can take over-write all broadcasts to deliver their message. And whether I agree with that message or not, I don't like the idea that changing the channel has zero effect. (If you're a cynic like me, you'll also see the irony in my last statement.)

Is there no one else who was affected, saw, heard this interruption?
(If not, perhaps we're all "safe" as no one watches tv on Monday nights?)

I live in New York State too, and have satellite. I've been working late the last few nights, going to bed between 1-2a.m., and strange things have been happening with the satellite reception, like flipping on and off, error messages, etc. This isn't unusual when there's inclement weather, but it's been clear and calm here for several days; only a thunderstorm this afternoon. Naturally I thought it was our equipment, but now I wonder. Unfortunately, I wasn't watching tv tonight...

Well, that's encouraging! Go Yankees! (They need it.)

Also, it points up the HUGE probability that this was "local"...my part of NY State. So, either a (former) TimeWarner cable employee--or an evil smarty-pants who figured out how to interfere with the satellite....

What do I know? EAS (Emergency Alert System, formerly Emergency Broadcast System godknowswhytheyhadtochangethename) does not operate across channels. Way back, 70's?, the networks argued that they shouldn't have to interrupt programming when the system needed testing according to FCC rules...that's why this "local" incident was weird.

Outside of that? I know I'm tanking in "metal", unlikely to blow anyone out of the water in "macro" (though I'll try) and there's no fear of me in "leading lines" as i did not enter, though I may comment so watch out.

I will update this thread if any of the media admit to what happened.
