heyah, all ya'll! what a heckuva week...almost 1300 shots at the beach and well over 2000 shots from the IndyCars race this past weekend. i've got them weeded and sorted, and will hopefully start editing them soon...

but, in the meantime, here are some straight out of the camera*

more racing images

more beach art

* note: only edits so far were to reduce size to 18% and one pop of slight usm. no cropping, rotating, or auto-anything...

enjoy!!!

Eureka!!! Out of Camera works. Like seeing the beauty of a woman's face before she covers it with make-up.

Were there any major differences between shooting Indy and Nascar? Which did you like better?

HUGE! for one, the drivers are unbelievably accessible. they are always ready to smile for a camera. as for the race shooting, they were doing 160-180 mph where the stock cars are going 110-125. they also are a lot, lot smaller cars. let's just say you get pretty quick on the panning ;-) also, there's only half the cars (22 vs 43). this makes for a lot more room on pit road.

i'd say the biggest downside is how fast the race runs. nascar races are marathons; you can get around to shoot from just about everywhere. the indy races are like lightning; you pretty much have to pick a couple places you want to shoot from, and hope you'll get what you need. for example, i left turn 2 with 40 laps to go--that barely left me 10 minutes to get across the infield to the start/finish line!

ay-yi-yi, it's almost like picking your favorite child...i love them both because they are really two completely different animals. they are different races, racers, events, atmospheres--in some ways, not much in common. the weird thing is, even though IRL is much more laid back, i felt more stress in trying to get racing shots. on the other hand, IRL doesn't have a 'dress code'...nascar requires long pants and no sleeveless shirts on pit road or in the garage area once the race is on!

@neil thanks!

Look for NASCAR to have a counterpart for Danica Patrick within a season or two if the female driver continues her rise. They are too marketing-oriented to let the IRL get an advantage without challengeing it.

actually, i met erin crocker this past weekend, and believe me, there is no comparison. she earned an engineering degree a couple years ago, and is extremely articulate, easy going, and comfortable. she has signed a developmental contract with Evernham Motorsports, and they are planning on her making her NASCAR debut at the Busch race in richmond this september! i'll post up some pix in a bit.
