OK. I know what you're gonna say, and I admit it. I'm stoopid.
I was preparing to do my first (and long delayed) photo backup so that I wouldn't lose all my pics in the event of a system malfunction. Seriously - I'm not just saying that. I had the discs all ready to go, and the computer FROZE. Had to unplug it from the wall to get it to shut
off.
Anyway, it wouldn't reboot for the longest time & I thought I'd lost EVERYTHING. I finally got it going (in safe mode) and burned 2 cd-r's - one with My Documents and the other with My Pictures.
I put a new operating system on (PCLinux OS, in case you're wondering - I had been using Xandros) and configured everything and I said to myself, hey - I'll reload My Docs and MyPics.
My Docs went on with no problem (once I figured out how to find the silly cd drive) and I thought, well - that was easy.
So I said to myself, self, lets load the pics and try out the new GIMP.
I put the cd in the drive and waited for it to do its thing. And waited. And waited. And checked that I had it in the right drive. And waited.
And began to get the gnawing suspicion that all was not right in Linux-land.
So I pulled up the M3b cd burning program ('cuz I couldn't get a direct link to the cd drive (won't let you if there's nothing in it)) and checked the contents of the disc.
Nothing. Just an empty disc. Not a single picture on the bloody thing. No flowers, no waterfalls, no hiking trips, no FAMILY PICS (my husband's gonna be soooooo pissed), nothing.
AAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!
So now that I'm picture-less, here's my question:
How do I go about getting copies of the stuff in my protfolio onto my hard drive (and immediately onto cd)? Is there a preferred method? Also, will this affect the prints I have up on the DPCPrints site? If not, can I get the higher res files from DPCPrints so I'm not stuck with just the little pics I have elsewhere?
I don't currently have anything that might be up for validation, so I'm not real worried about that (although I did get my highest ever placing/scoring pic in the Fantasy challenge).
I've asked all my relatives to send me copies of the pics I sent them, so I should be able to get some of them back.
>sigh< Sometimes computers can be a real pain in the ass. And sometimes I'm guilty of helping them be that way. :)
I've decided that I'm not gonna let this get me down though. Now that I have to start from scratch, I'm gonna (try to) be more organized with the storage and labeling, and hopefully this time around the pics will be better since I've learned a LOT of stuff from all you fine folks here at DPC.
Any help with info on downloading would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear this! If you contact D&L ( Help> Contact) they may be able to help you with the high res files. It won't affect what you currently have up for sale at all. |

Oh no, that sucks!
Sorry if this sounds like I'm trying to be funny, but for once I'm not (well, maybe just a little)... did you try reading the other side of the CD?
-edit, sometimes it's hard to tell with the no-name, shiny-on-both-sides CDs which side is right.

Thanks, mk. I'll do that.
Slippy, I - well... I don't know if I should laugh at that or hiss at you!
:)
I actually did double check that I had the disc inserted properly, and while I admit to operator error, I think the error occurred yesterday while I was backing it up.

So sorry to hear that happened to you! Some belated advice:
Buy an external USB hard drive (you can pick up a 250GB for about $200) and put ALL your "My Documents" stuff in there. That way you can slick your entire hard drive without affecting your personal documents. |

Wow - sorry to hear that. It really does suck the big one. I hope you recover most if not all one way or the other.
One suggestion - DO NOT trash the CD you thought you put pictures on. I will see if I can find it since I have used them before, but there is a place you can send the CD to and if there is anything recoverable on it they can/will do it for you. When I used them it was a flat fee for the service.
Try google on CD recovery. I will post when/if I find the place I used - it was a few years ago.

Been there myself. I had three hard drive failures last summer myself. I was ready to cry the first time and kill myself the next two. Now just make sure that you do backups right away! What I have done is put in a secondary hard drive so I have duplicate photos on both drives and also back up to cd! I never delete the files of both drives at once and always double check that the images on the CD actually open up. One time I had a disc I burnt that you could see the directories but NONE of the files would actually open. Never did figure out why...

Thanks for the sympathy & info.
I'm taking the disc tomorrow to my local Linux Guru and see if he can rescue what my system can't find. (I hope it's on there!)
And I think I've learned my lesson: backup backup backup and double check to see that it backed up!!

did you get any emails backed up?
I once found a load of pictures I had emailed to people in my "sent" folder that were still attached to the email as well as in my "deleted" folder.
Just a thought. |

Haven't checked the sent emails.
I'll do that.
Thanks!
