My thoughts exactly.
Sounds like fun!

Arghh! I have been shopping for a macro lens and didn't get one yet. I doubt I'd get one on time! I have closeup filters, but I suspect they'll never be able to compete with the macro lenses!

this might motivate me to get a macro lens

Closeup filters and Kenko extension tubes are two alternatives to a macro lens at much less cost.

For the last Macro challenge, I reversed a 50mm lens. Now I'm thinking extension tubes. Do I really need the whole set, or would a 25mm tube suffice? The Canon 70-200 f/4L will focus to 3' on its own, and the Tamron 28-75 will got to about 1'. Any advice?

do both, extension tubes and reversed 50, see how small of a DOF you can get there

Considering how close I had to be with the 50mm alone, I figure the subject would have to be somewhere inside the camera if I did both. ;-)

This is taken with 70-200. You can see the shallow DOF by looking at the space between the planks. This is the full frame, not cropped at all. I guess that this lens can do good macros as well.
Worth a try anyway.

I just ordered a Sigma 105mm macro lens on Saturday. LOL! I should get it before challenge ends.

Shannon, I'd get the whole kenko set if i were you. There's no need at all to spend the money on Canon's tubes as they don't contain any glass ... there's nothing for a third party to screw up :)

I just wanted to know if I could get by with a single 25mm Kenko vs. a 12mm, 20mm and 36mm for double the price. Will it be macro enough?

Shannon, 50mm reversed on 70-200 ( at 200mm ) will give you a really extreme macro. I don't think these extension tubes can give you that magnification. The only problem you might have at 200mm is zero depth of field. I tried 50mm reversed on 300mm and even at F45 I don't get much dof.

What's the forumula for figuring out magnification using extension tubes? Whats'the downside? Just DOF?

I still can't decide about the macro lens. Anyone have any thoughts on the length versus other tradeoffs. Is the new Sigma 180mm too long for a DSLR and macro use, or just right? The Canon 60mm EF-S might also be an interesting choice, or does it require you to be too close for insects? What about the revamped Sigma 50 and 105mm macro lenses? Does Canon's USM make a difference for macros, since it appears autofocus isn't often used when shooting at macro distances?

Thanks in advance to anyone with advice!

while your lens isn't tested, this link should give you a very good idea of how close you can get. the 70-200 2.8 can get to about .4 (1:1 being 1.0) and the 2.8 doesn't focus as close as the 4.0.
