A question aimed at photographers who work in RAW, and have purchased a Dual-Processor PowerMac in the last few months:
My situation: I have been investigating the PC way for graphics processing. IE: dual processor AMD something running Linux. (reasoning: linux can address much more memory and can effectively use dual core and dual processor systems to better effect than Windows.). The thing that stopped that way of thinking is that The Gimp can only do 8-bit imaging. This is not good. Explained HERE .
So, back I go to Mac.
The question is; to the people that bought the top-of-the-line models: What made you do it? What performance benefits have you seen? Have you not seen?
Does a beefier graphics card make photoshop processing faster? ie: ATI X800.
ATTN: This isn't a Macs with Intel processors debate. That can be found here

well I have a Dual-Processor PowerMac and and a 1.5 ghz powerbook. I had a powermac 450mhz cube. To answer your questions.... What made me do it? - MY line of work, I am a graphic designer/art director and for working in photoshop or illustrator I needed a faster computer & bigger hardrive. The cube I had was just to slow. On my Dual-Processor PowerMac the speed is awesome.......What performance benefits have you seen? - The performance I have seen is a larger harddrive on both the dual mac and my laptop and most important the speed. Photoshop work is great now no complaints at all. Switching between programs is no longer any waiting. hmmm...... benefits I have not seen the PRICE macs are not cheap. They work great just wish they would lower the price.
