I'm going to upgrade my 300d in a little while here. Originally, I was just going to get a 17-40 f/4L lens, but I've decided to upgrade the body before acquiring some glass.

Being that my only investment to Canon really is the 75-300 f3.5-5.6, I don't consider myself bound to the Canon system.

I looked at the XT today, and it's a toy. Sure, it's quicker and has a lot of nice features compared to my 300d (which already feels like a toy in my hands) but it's just too small. It seems cramped and lightweight and cheap when I held it. So that's definately out.

One option is to sell my 300d body only to knock off some of the cost of a 20d (or a 20d replacement depending on how long down the road this upgrade occurs). Am I correct in assuming that the 20d accepts EF-S lenses such as the 18-55? I realize it's not the 'greatest' lens, but I would be planning on purchasing the 17-40L in the future to replace it, probably along with a 70-200 f4L as well.

Another option would be to sell the rebel, kit lens, and 75-300 to offset some of the cost on a d70 or d70s with 18-70 kit lens. Then down the road get whatever Nikon's good glass is. I messed with the d70 today, and it felt really good in my hands. The body felt rugged and the controls were all easy to reach and it just felt right in my hands.

----------

I realize the 20d is a bit faster than the d70 as far as fps and so on so that is definately a consideration. The 20d flash sync is 1/250 and the d70 is 1/500 so that's something to consider as well. I'm not too worried about the extra noise that the d70 may produce over the 20d because to be honest, I like the noise. Not to mention, the 20d just reduces the noise in-camera and if I really wanted to get rid of it on the d70, I could do that with Neat Image. Another thing that I believe the d70 does that the 20d doesn't is that you can create folders in the camera to sort. So for example, if you're at one place you can make a folder then you drive to another, make another folder right there -- with the 20d, every 100 and it creates the new, generic folder name for you. I know, that's getting nit-picky, but that matters to me.

----------

What do you all think I should do? These are the only two options I am considering. I'm not going to get a pentax or any other dslr because I'd rather just stick to Nikon or Canon. Thanks.

Just addressing part of the post - the 20D also feels small to me, especially with larger lenses on it, when the optional battery grip is not attached. The grip changes the feel of the camera considerably, so maybe the rebel should not be ruled out (either the one you have or the newer one) if you had a grip to go with it. The difference really is night and day in terms of feel and balance, at least to me. Just something else to throw in the mix :-)

Yes it take EF-S lenses. It's better than the D70 in terms of stats, but doubtfully in ease of use. I wouldn't recommend the 350xt for an upgrade from the 300D... I think the 20D is worth the extra money. The nikon's kit lens is supposed to be far better than the canon's. I would push you towards the D70 at this time if you don't want to invest in canon things. The 10D is still an option, you can find them almost new and it's a little upgrade from the rebel, and if you trade up the rebel it will only cost a few hundred.

'trade up'? That sounds like I can go to a photography store and they'll give me credit for my rebel? Is that so? If so, are there any of those around the Pittsburgh area?

I'm leaning towards the d70 to be honest. Canon seems to have more followers. I guess if they were even in price, it would be the 20d, but the d70 is a good bit cheaper and has everything I want and need.

the D70 is pretty comperable to the 10D... by trade up I mean sell for cash, and use that cash... a good condition rebel can go for $500! A good condition 10D goes for $700. Of course you could put the money anywhere you like :-)

Well, I have an offer of $550 for mine with the kit lens, so I'm pretty sure I'm going to take it. Not sure what the 75-300 is worth, but it's not much. I'll just have to save for a little while. I guess it's better to sell it now while someone is interested than wait till the money is saved up and have no one interested.
