My son is going to audition for a play today, and he needs an acting headshot. I just shot some, but they didn't tell him what size (or aspect ratio) they should be, or any other printing parameters. Anyone know? Advice on printing? B&W, Color, Glossy, Matte, ...

Thanks in advance--I'll post the shot too in a few...

The "traditional" headshot (in the US) used to be an 8x10 B&W glossy. Today, they may want color instead. I would take along one of those, and maybe some 5x7's of alternate shots. Good luck to both of you!

I've always taken 8x10 black and white photos in the past. Traditionally, theatre acting headshots have been B&W. Recently, I haven't been in the theatre world as much as film and film is going quickly to 8x10 colour photos.

Hope that helps.

Oh, and definitely a glossy

Thank you.

Here's the shot he settled on. I did mess it up a bit in processing tje background per the notes. Hopefully, it won't ruin his chances.

Also I didn't get the right color balance, even though it was raw and postprocessed. That might hurt the most, because he has beautiful blue eyes.

Edit: Forgot the shot:

As far as the editing goes, I don't believe it's a big deal to a director. Mainly, having a head shot included in your acting resume is a way to remind the director of who you are after you leave. Editing and colour texture takes a backseat to the basic recognition attached to the resume.

I hope he gets the part he wants!

Thanks for the advice. We were there for over 4 hours! The play is "Lost in Yonkers", and he thinks he got the part. That's the good news (though we'll see). The bad news is that it's 35 minutes from here, and we are going to be doing a lot of driving him back and forth. But at least it's in Saratoga, which is a very nice, fun place. I had a lot of time to walk around and take pics. So much time, I ran out of memory cards--and I had 1.75 GB with me (but I was shooting in RAW).

Thanks again for the advice. BTW - he ended up using a B&W one. I was surprised how good that came out on my Canon S750!
