Hi all,
just been trying out some star-trail shots and it got me wondering. Can one damage the CCD/CMOS in the camera by taking a long exposure (30 mins or even more), does it heat up? Can I fry an egg on it afterwards. Just wonderd if anyone knows the score on this matter..

There is no damage risk from long exposure. You may, on very long exposures, see haze along the edge of the image from (slight) sensor heating. On very long exposures, it's usually better to take multiple, consecutive, shorter exposures and "stack" them later in PS.

I was under the assumption that since a sensor can eventually die (typically after 1,000,000 shots) there had to be something to cause it. I don't know if light could be it. I doubt that taking a 30 minute exposure of the sun wide open would be great for your camera though.
