you'll need this ringlite flash

and this Canon 100mm f2.8 macro

start with the lens, it's one of the best.

get the flash as soon as you can for the bug photography :)

A ring light is nice, but they are somewhat explensive. Sure they will help a great deal but are not completely necessary. That lens is a fine one but for macro remember "always manual focus" - Tom Hicks so you can get by with this lens or the sigma 105 just as easily for less money. The only reason you wouldn't get these is if you knew you were going to use the lenses for something other than macro work. Also look here for how to build your own ringflash. I've seen other ways to do it but this one looks promising.

edit: don't be confused by the lens I linked to, it's the older version of the lens dan suggested. It's just as sharp, and doesn't need a lens hood. Also it can be found for a lot less than the new one.

I'd agree that the Canon 100/2.8 USM is a great lens. The Sigma 105 and Tamron 90 are also good lenses, but the Canon, IMO, is worth the extra money, based on build quality, switchable focus range, USM with full-time manual focus, and sharpness wide open.
Only bugger with the Canon is the lens hood is a $40 option, and is needed for non-macro work. The 100/2.8 is a great longer portrait or short tele lens. The USM makes focus reasonably fast in the normal distance range.
You do not need a ring flash. Mount a lumiquest bounce card on one of the canon shoe-mount flashes and you're set. I like the 80/20 with the insert set, I usually use the gold insert for a little warmer light.
