In one of my computers running win2k professional I lately have this weird thing: all of a sudden, in the middle of everything, my monitor shuts off and I just can't get it to work again.
this means I have to reset and loose everything I was working on.
Sometimes though it only flicker but doesn't shut off.
I have 2 computers with single monitor and this switch box. The other comp keep working just fine, and it had never happened there. so I guess the prob is not the monitor but the computer.
The only thing I could come up with was that maybe there's some keyboard shortcut to shutting the monitor that I'm not aware of and I accidentally press. But I tried searching and couldn't find anything to get the monitor on again by keyboard.
Does anyone has any idea? This is so frustrating!!
I would appreciate any kind of help.
Thanks!! |

Try connecting the monitor directly to the computer. If that solves the problem, clean all of the contacts and try the switch again.

Are you using a KVM switch (that is, switching keyboard, video, and Mouse)? Which computer are you actively using when the one goes out? Could the one going blank be going in to hibernation? You might check its powersave options. It could be hibernating and not reacting to the KVM when you switch it back.

thanks a lot but still not better...
northrop3 - Yes, using kvm but the one shutting off is the one I'm working on. No hibernation. In the middle of typing something it just goes off :-(
Mick - all connectors were checked a thousand times already :-(
Also I tried switching the two comps, and still the one that always goes off - stays the same.

Sounds like maybe a video card issue in the one computer. Maybe it is overheating? Or maybe the connection to the card has a short. In any case I would look there. |

damn.... didn't think of that... overheating could be an issue around here I suppose.
Will look into it too! Thanks.
By the way, any chance anyone knows of a way to restart the monitor without reseting the computer?
The monitor goes to stand by so the on/off button is not effective.

Try physically unplugging the monitor, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in.

the problem is your computer, not the monitor. if your computer does not give signals to the monitor, your monitor can not make up things, right? :D so fixing the computer is the only way to go. I'd suggest you to check your video as jbsmithana has suggested. My screen used to freeze once a while. I found the heat sink fan of my video card has decided to retire. I replaced it, the problem has gone since. Also, check out other fans in your computer, make sure they are all working well.
Done all that, if the problem still exists, scan for viruses and spyware. then check out your hardware drivers. My Dell computer at work, reboots once a while, I find it is a corruptted NIC card driver, I am about to fix that next monday.
Good Luck! |
