Found a listing in the classifieds for a Canon D60 for $350 (body only). Is this a good price? Looking on www.dpreview.com it shows the street value as $2000...I am guessing this is when it was first released in 2000. Any opinions on this camera? I really want a dSLR!

Thanks,
Jordan

It's a decent price depending on the quality :-)

It does sound like a good price, but if the shutter mechanism hasn't been replaced, you should assume it will have to be replaced soon. This is a $200-300 job (if I recall correctly). Of course, that advice applies to any digicam. They tend to go through more actuations in less time than film-based SLRs (except for ones in the hands of PJs and some other pros).

The D60 is best compared with the 10D since it has the most in common with that model. The AF speed is slower (quite likely more accurate) on the D60 than compared with the 10D (and others that came after the D60): Some say it is night and day and I'm inclined to agree (in favour of the 10D). The D60 has only 3 focus points, but that's not unusual in an SLR. The 10D and onward (including the 3xxD series) have 7 or more (in the case of 1-series) focus points. This is a significant consideration depending on what your intended use is.

In my opinion, the D60 is of questionable use at ISO 400 although I won't hesitate to use it if it means making the shot. I tend to avoid ISO 800 and ISO 1000 like the plague, but there have been some rare instances where I've used them. Noise tends to be visually higher on screen, but is significantly reduced in print.

I'd seriously consider such a price if it included the battery grip. Otherwise, I'd be on the fence with that price, depending on when the shutter was last replaced.

Thanks a lot Dale for the information. I will be sure to ask about the shutter being replaced. Hopefully it's not the reason he is selling it...
