I did these photos for a friend- her boyfriend (seen in the last 3 shots) wanted a portrait of her for his desk at work. I didn't have a lot of time or any of my lighting gear- this "shoot" was in my empty condo the night before we sold the condo and moved across country! So I was working with outside light in #1, window light in the next several, and bounced flash in the final bunch. This was in a small room- I couldn't back off of her as much as I would have liked.
Much as I usually don't like selective desat, I really like #2 the best. I like her expression and the composition, and her eyes are such a striking blue that I thought it worked well. I tried it with all but her eyes desaturated but found I preferred the posted version more.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I like 7, 8, 9 the best. I think the difference in lighting brightens up her face and makes her skin tones better. A couple of them are too close for my taste. 10 is a great couple photo. Good work!

Thanks for that- I prefer the bounced flash shots as well- unfortunately by that time she was starting to get giggly and was squinting in most of the photos ;)
Ah well, hopefully there will be a couple they like!

Very nice. I'm sure the couple were pleased! I like no. 6, 10 and 12. 10 is cute and quirky!

I like a little bit of shadow in portraits to add some depth and make them look more natural. Of the set, my top three would be 6,3,2 (in order). In 6 her eyes are clear and bright and her smile is not distorted. Her shirt is off-center and a bit bright relative to her face. Just thinking out load at the moment, but maybe crop a little shorter to show less shirt and burn the shirt and left side of her neck a bit. This one might also be good in B&W where you can play with the shadow and contrast a bit more.
Great photos and thanks for sharing so we can talk about them!

I think thats also why I like them - they show her 'character', I guess.

Thanks all- and Nusbaum thanks for the suggestions. I may play around with them more today, depending on what they say. I haven't heard back yet!

Woot! She just ordered 14 prints from me! Everyone here really likes #6, but it's not even on her print list. Funny :)
Thanks for your input guys!

Very nice work! I like #3 the best, followed by #6. The colors really match her skin tone and eye color well in those, IMO...
#2 is quite interesting.. but I would prefer a deeper DOF with both eyes in focus because of the selective desat (the selective desat makes exactly three things prominent in the picture, and one of them is blurred...)
Once again, great pics! |

It is moot now, but I might suggest that #2 is good because of the framing, pose and the angle of lighting and not because of selective desaturation. Desat is to 'artsy' for a desk photo.
For that one I'd go either all B&W or all color and most likely all color considering its intended purpose.

I like 2 and 3 as shots best of the bunch though I like most of them in terms of expression - I think you've caught her vivaciousness very well. The ones of the two of them don't work as well for me though I'm sure they like these too.
I must admit, I really quite intensely dislike the selective desat treatment though.
But what I think doesn't matter and it's good to know she's happy with your work!

They're nice shots but I would suggest a different composition or crop. When dealing with someone (especially a woman!!) who's potentially over weight, such a tight crop at eye level isn't entirely flattering.
These shots are technically good, tho. |

Those images came out very nice, they are very natural and warm.
The only thing I might do with the first handful of images is play around with the white balance and coax a little warmth into the images. Her skin just appears slightly cold in those images. Images 7,8 and 9 look much more flattering then the preceeding images.
All in all, you did a great job. |

Wow, this just goes to show how different everyone's tastes are. She loved #2, #3 and #10 and ordered 3 of each, plus 2 each of #5 and #9, as well as one that I took a few months ago of her boyfriend.

Any thoughts on how to composition or crop that would work better in this situation? I haven't learned enough yet to change my approach based on physical characteristics.

I think you did a very nice job with these photos and congrats on the print order!! I do like the selective desat on #2 as well. I saw someone mentioned shadowing and I'm very much a fan of that with portraits... so the ones with natural light on one side I thought were great. |
