Does anyone have it? Is it good? What does it contols?

I want to buy one for two things: Slow shutter shooting (like night and dusk photos) and at vacation to photograph myself (it's more practical than the timer).

But how does it work? When you press it does it focus before shooting or do you have to focus before? Can it be used for bulb? How?

Any experience with it? Please share.

I've got one, there are two ways on the camera to use it, one is when you push the button on the remote it takes a shot and the other is with a timed delay. If your camera is set to autofocus when you push the button it will autofocus and shoot. If you are set to manual then, well that should be self-explanitory. To use it on bulb set your shutter speed to bulb, compose your shot and fire away, when your time is up, push the button again to close the shutter.

Are there any settings to be set on the camera? Is it tricky to get it into the infrared range? I received one for Christmas but haven't had luck making it work, and I can't find instructions anywhere. Obviously, it's meant to be foolproof, but I'm proving it wrong. :)

not to ruin the Nikon thread but take a look at the Canon 20Da

it is designed for low-light/astrophotography

It's the ML-L3.

I would say that you need to be careful when pointing it at the camera as if you move too far to the side, it doesn't work. But others have said the opposite. Take your pick. The only thing that bugs me is that after you set it and leave it on for a while, the camera resets back to shutter press release and you need to go through the process of setting up the remote again.

i use mine all the time with little problem. sometimes it doesn't pick up from directly behind the camera, but i've worked around it.

i've only just recently discovered the "click twice in bulb mode" feature. man, i feel like a dope.

waterlilies: stupid question time, but did you put a battery in it? mine came without a battery. where are you standing when you try to use it? and, finally, are you setting the camera's mode to Remote or Remote w/ Timer? otherwise, the remote signal is ignored...

i don't have my cam with me, but isn't there a menu setting that lets you choose how long to leave it in remote mode? i seem to remember that.... could be wrong.

There isn't a setting to change how long it stays for. It will stay in remote mode until you shut the camera off.

As far as the quality of the remote, it is OK. I was going to purchase the D70, but purchased the D70s instead becuase you can also use a wired remote. With the wireless, you have to be somewhere in front of the camera, which is great for self portraits, but horrible for using as a stabilizer for every other shot.

One question for all of you also, how do you insert a section that was originally posted by another person?

if you click the "quote" button at the top right of a post you want to quote, it will put that entire post into your new post, and you can edit it as needed.

I don't know about 70s but 70 does have a setting for how long the camera will stay in "Remote" mode; from 1 min. to 15 min. It's CSM Menu 25

Thanks for this. This has been bugging me.

I've made a vow to myself to get around to reading the manual before I upgrade...

Those aren't stupid questions at all. This is the part that I needed instructions for. I assume the Remote modes are set in the menu? I'll have to dig through there a bit more, obviously.

I think mine came with a battery. It had a little pull-tab to activate it, as I remember.

Ok D70 shooters...
I was able to get the ML-3L workaround using the IPAQ and it works like a charm

Here are the details for IPAQML-3L IPAQ

Palm users can find the details here
ML-3L Palm

I was even able to get it to work using my Direct TV remote...
The camera thinks that it is a sanyo TV (sanyo code 11323)

True the ML-3L is less bulky then lugging around a IPAQ or a TV remote... but the IPAQ and the universal remote DOES work from behind the camera which I understand the ML-3L has issues with.

Like all IR remotes...you can bounce it off stuff too. Walls, ceiling, etc.
I have been looking for a small piece of fiberoptic cord to "glue" on to shoot from the back (little L shape up and over the camera) and also from the "obstructed" side (Right when holding the camera).
