This is my first somewhat successful shot at taking a paning photo. Comment away, SVP (please).

Very cool photo! The only thing that would make it even better IMO would be just a little more panning blur in the background.

Thank you - in retrospect, I should have used the wider aperture (this is taken with f/8) and that would have increased the blur somewhat as the shutter speed would have to increase.

Actually, you would want to use a smaler aperture, e.g. f/11, and so decrease the shutter speed, and thus get a bit more BG blur.

You are correct. I was thinking of a DOF blur, when the desired effect here is motion blur. So, longer exposure and smaller aperture is the key.

Whenever I want to induce the movement in a pan, I choose shutter-priority and test a few shots at 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60 sec, but rarely over 1/60th. |

A little more background blur might be nice, but I think this is a great shot! The expression on the boy's face is awsome! |
