Woops, I did it again...
The Digma at the zoo and the Long Beach Aquarium files are up, as well as photos of fellow photogs. To all those that took my Digma Shot at the zoo, please send it to me so I can post it online. Thanks.
BTW, checking out the Long Beach Shoreline/pier area seems very interesting, it maybe worth an outing.

Hey Chen, congrats on the CF card. Got your messege about possible lens purchase. Can you tell us what you want to do with it, what your budget is, and if you considering any specific lens in particular. Is it the Tamron 28-75mm XR Di f2.8?

Hey,
I think I actually got a paying gig. My collegue has been sharing a room with me since we are remodeling and he asked me to take a portrait of his family. Perhaps it was the shots on smugmug that he saw that convinced him.
Anyway, I said sure, I'll do it for free of course, and he says, "Oh no, we would pay for your services."
So I've my first paying gig for a $100 (if you don't count the Queen Mary Tickets). I don't plan on doing this for a living, but I'm excited about it.
I plan on carrying everything including my laptop in my bag, using a flash with goldtone Sto Fen diffuser (for a warm fill in light), and the 70-200 f2.8L lens. Then I'll have them pick out the pic's that they like and process them on my laptop and hand them a CD right there to print at Costco or something.
I've asked them to think about the type of shot that they want, as it's important to provide shots that they want, not the shots that you feel are artistic or best for them.

I dunno Tom.. 4-7 years and sleepless hours in college to get your doctorate or the so many years of photography skills :).. thats a tuffy..
Congrats on your first paying gig!! what will you be using to Post-process? For me i think that seems a little rushed to be giving photos right after the shoot, but then again you don't take many photos :). All you need is one of those straight out of the camera printers and you'll have "Tom's 1hr photo". GL on your shoot!!

Oh, I'll have my laptop and I'll use RSE and convert to TIFF and make any processing then save in JPEG and burn to CD. I'll only work on RAW images that they like from previewing it and deleating the rest that they don't like, hopefully about 6 so it should take about one hour to shoot and one hour to process.
I've broken down and will be joining some by wearing the dorky photo vest with the proceeds from the shoot. it's too handy to ignore. Any suggestions on brand and model? So far I like Tenba vests, here is a link.

I'll need to try these out so I guess I'll buy it this weekend at Samy's during their Fathers day sale.

muhahhahaha we've turned you to the vest side... To be honest mine is a fishermans vest i think.. not sure. Got it at a sport chalet in irvine for 15 bux and holds everything i need it to :).
I like that vest though. Mine has 18 pockets also, not to sure about the waterprof part myself.. don't think i'm going to go diving with my vest anytime soon :).
I was looking into purchasing this grip Tom //www.harbortronics.com/detail.php?id=2 next week. I don't know if its the same one, but i'm going to post this again as a "plea for help" just to get some feedback before purchasing.

Raul,
I think that is the battery grip. You can also look through dpreview.com and steves-digicams.com to look for the articles about them. But they seem to be back ordered.
As for the vest, I'm just thinking about it. But I'll probably not give in.

Well,
The photo shoot for my collegue's family went well.
I think he really liked them.
I didn't think they were that exceptional or anything, but they were technically good I think it was b/c it was just portraits of people that I didn't think were interesting to me in a photographic sense. So I didn't post them.
He seems to have liked them. He kept watching it on his computer as a slideshow all day and said his family argued over which x-mas card version to send out this year for several hours. (I had made some shots into a x-mas card by cropping and writing "merry x-mas...") He told me his son who recently has been diagnosed with brain cancer considers me his hero now and is interested in photography now and wants his own version of the Rawshooter Essential, although he only has a P&S that I don't think shoots in RAW ;). But I recommended the Konica Z20 as a good/cheap starting digicam to learn photography on. So maybe they'll get that.
So I guess my first paying gig was a hit. As they say, gotta give them what they want, not what you think is artistically interesting to you. I can see why doing this professionally might take the artisitic joy out of photography. I thought I'd wanted to do this more, but I think if I did this more than rarely boardering on occassionally, it would take all the fun out of this hobby for me.
I guess I'm just learning to go past the "I wanna be a famous photographer phase of this passion."

Some nice shots Arie - looks like they had a variety of fireworks (colors, styles) there. I felt like the ones I was watching were the same over and over!

Finally - my camera came in yesterday. So this meant the first chance to use my camera in a long time, and the first chance (at all) to test my Sigma 105 (or 'error 99', as Tom likes to call it :P).
Two of my shots so far can be seen here and here. Both are floral shots from my backyard. I think I prefer the one in the first link, but I mostly just had fun playing with my camera again. Too bad I missing the Macro challenge! I would've actually participated in a challenge for once (in a long while).

Hey Brian, congrats.
The pics look good. I guess the Sigma has been rechipped.
There is a classic carshow in Glendale Sat from 5:30-8:30PM and Lotus Festival at Echo park. I'll be at Glendale sat. and Lotus festival Sunday.
Let me know if you can make it.

I think I'll stick around here and play with my macro lens, though. I could probably do that out there as well, but would like to play with it here.. I have some shots from today that I need to edit, etc.. and I'm still not big on doing street photography (although I like looking at it.. I think I'm still a bit 'camera-shy' - being behind it, that is). I should probably get out and do more sooner or later.
Thanks for the invite though - I'll definitely wanna head out more often. Starting my photo blog on its own domain sort of motivates me to want to produce more shots (for whatever reason).
