Like Keith, i would like a little more feedback from the 65 people that voted me a 4 or lower.
I had some great comments and am overwhemled - 5 Faves!
I also got some ying/yang comments - someone thought it too staged, others were moved to tears by how real they found it. so i dont know which end of the stick to spin from.
I did get some comments on the outfit - which i agree wasn't the best - i was actually taking "ghost" pictures - and by the time i left the jail it was not white at all haha.

I also wonder if my alternative would have done better because the local was much easier accessed...

(ps - my entry was a self portrait shot in the womans shower of an abandoned jailhouse)

I didn't vote in the challenge but would have given you a 6-7. (alternative shot an 8-9)

What strikes me as off is the white skirt(demands too much attention) and the pose (looks like a snatch shot if you don't mind me being so blunt) the crop is too tight on the right side.

Now, what is right-on..the background and subtle lighting. I think this image might work if cropped into different segments, or the skirt darkened a bit.

I hope this helps.

Pretty powerful location. I'm a person who believes emotion and interest comes from the face and eyes.....getting a strong reaction from me without showing the face is completely possible but not here. Showing her panties and bruises are both good ideas. I think it gives her a more "white trash" feel that people naturally would expect in the environment you shot in. It just doesn't grab me, tho.

Overall, nice work.

Gave you an 8. I like the emotive power of the image. One thing struck me though - the pose. If the model is so distraught then a more foetal pose would work better (like in your 2nd version). I don't think the pose used shows the full extent of the vulnerability you were going for. The leg up just seems too bold/strong to be that disturbed ....if you get me?

Just an opinion.

Any idea how i could have darkened the skirt within basic edit rules? I tried everything i knew i was allowed to do, and nothing worked out for me.

I wont wear white next itme i go to jail haha.

i loved this photo...gave it an 8...i don't have intelligent comments about it because i'm very much a novice right now, but i know what grabs my attention and makes me stop clicking the mouse...very nice work.

I gave you a 7 for this picture, also gave a 7 to Keith. I liked both picture. My average scoring is below 5, so 7 is good and they were both in my top 30.

I think the one you entered is much stronger than your alternative.

goldberry - i blame my unruley mop of curls - and the fact that theres no electricity in the jail = no lights. I agree though, i would have liked to get an eye peering over the arm, it would have really added to the composition.

I scored it a 9 and I am not someone who gives too many nines. I thought it was one of the strongest images in the challenge. At least inside the top 5 according to me.

I didn't vote on the darkness challenge but if I did one of the things I would have commented on in this image is the overly white skirt. Your scene is set with the walls and her position; the white skirt tells me its a posed/planned shot and the emotion is unreal. As a viewer I hate that and feel used. If the skirt were grey or beige like the walls, maybe smudged and dirty, it would have been a 10. As it is, 5.

Sorry, but my .02.

Hard to believe a little thing like that would make a huge difference, right? But a little thing like that turns an average image into a great one.

Coming in loud and clear - i did have both legs up, and thats how i wanted it to be - but i was sitting on a ledge that was about 2 inches wide - not enough room!! Sheesh didnt these people that built this jail over 100 years ago consider that i might want to take a photo and i needed a wider ledge? How Rude! haha.

I didn't vote but I would have given it a four. I know, I know, I'm the conservative 18 year old youth but I don't like it because it just comes across as inapropriate to me. I understand that point you were getting across, and I have a respect for it (please don't start a fight on the forums), but I have to say I don't like it. I think it is a nice shot but I agree about the white thing. The crop on the first one is a little to tight and I don't know that I understand the location without being told it.

I'm sorry that this is so jumbled, my mind is a little frazzeled right now. I hope this doesn't start a fight, I do respect womens rights and all that jazz I just am a fan of modesity that is all. I find modesity is so much more beautiful than it's latter

dahkota - no need to be sorry, its the reasons for the lower scores that i need to hear. I wish it was better planned (or i had brought 2 skirts for the different shoots). The skirt WAS way to white, and i couldnt for the life of me work out how to dull it down a bit.

Technically I shouldn't be posting here - I gave it a 10. It hit me immediately when I first viewed it. It hit me every time I viewed it after that. I think the concept was what was hard for people. Not enough open minds or people willing to look at an image for more than a few seconds to interpret/absorb/let it take effect just so they can hurry up and get the voting over and get back to bashing everything they see.

The white skirt didn't bother me at all (as stated by someone above) I thought it was perfect - it was the incongruity in the photo. On top of that her panties showing makes it completely plausible - someone from one place finds themself in another completely different place and it just doesn't matter anymore.

I don't really understand what youre getting at? You would vote low because you can see my underpants? Belly?

I take it it's a self portrait then? And you were in that abandoned jail, by yourself, in the dark? *faints* You've got bigger balls than I! Figuratively speaking of course...we can see you don't actually have any balls *wink*

I know the challenge was non-editing - but I think the image would look even stronger in BW/Sepia with some dodge 'n' burn to dirty up the skirt(!) and highlight the skin. Next time bring some melty choccy for authentic prison grime!

:)

Yeh, i do some stupid-scary things when it comes to getting photos - there is a section in the mens floor of the jail i wont go in even when i'm not alone and i am totting a flashlight. It gives me the creepin' willies!!(don't have one of those either ;))

no, I would have voted it a four becauase I don't like it, and the reason why I don't like it is as I posted before
06/22/2005 06:08:13 PM · #22
If only we could dodge and burn!
It wouldn't have been as tight a crop either if we were allowed - there was a big ugly pale thing sticking out of the wall to the right that i know people would have fussed about.

Actually, i am surprised the 4 spots of paint near my leg hasn't been meantioned by anyone - they bugged the life out of me post processing.

But the reason you said you dont like it was modesty? I don't understand.

Elli,
I also scored it a 9, & left a comment. However, the post I have quoted, from Xion, is one you should note carefully in evaluating the success of your entry. Have a look at Xion's own work, and at other people's images that he scores 9 or 10 ... a 9 from Xion is worth a hundred 10's from the "Oh, WOW, like, that's waaaaay cool!!!!!" crowd.
