I came across a wierd artifact in one of my photos when I was photographing clubs in Krakow, Poland.

That's me, holding a nice cold Zywiec beer in one hand, and my SB-600 in the other. My cousin Piotr snapped the shot. Notice the lens flare just left of my beer.


Here's a zoom of that lens flare which was cropped, but not resized from the original (pixel to pixel).


And a 400% zoom on the lens flare, without any anti-alising, so that you could see the original pixels.


At first, I imagined it to be some sort of light interference, but the odds of it having a frequency exactly equal to the pixel seperation and aligned exactly vertically are slim to none.

It must be some sort of electronic effect similar to Moire... but how to explain it?

NOTE: This was shot in RAW, and I removed all sharpening.
