I normally dont do this, but these two were way underrated.
Sub-5? You've got to be kidding me.

The scoring on this one was all over the map because it is just too dark and only some people whose brightness was higher than others could see it. I could see it ok on my laptop, but black as night on my CRT monitor.

I definately agree on the first one...I'm betting it got hammered because of all the uncalibrated monitors around here.

i'm dissapointed with my own placement - purely because i think i met the challenge really well and was beaten by photos that i think came shy of metting the challenge - but i don't hardly think my metal submission meets the challenge nearly as well so maybe this is my week!

I really liked the first one too. |

I also voted the dark one low... for not being able to see it.
I think it's not actually the problem of uncalibrated monitors, but the fact that dpc itself has a grey background. I could see the image no problem now that I took it outside and loaded it up with a black background (which I wish I did before).
Maybe if dpc used a solid black background for voting instead of the grey, we will be able to see more tones. |

Complaining about a 6+ score is the surest way to "He's just a whiner"-ville. hehehe.
I should know.. I arrived in that town early, and never left.

Gave the first one an 8... but the second did not fare as well in my voting scale. |

I too am very disappointed with my score. Don't like to be a complainer, but I really do not believe this shot deserved the following scores:
1 8
2 18
3 25
here is the photo:

Well Linda, here is my take on the scores you received, and are only my opinons.
First of all, a 5.0 really isn't a bad score. This was a challenge of creativity, mood and "Heebie-Jeebies" in a way. Your picture is touching, and as a former Pug owner, hits a soft spot here. Here is where I believe it had problems:
The average voter spends only a couple seconds to look at it and cast a vote. Your image needed a few seconds longer to get a feeling for and perhaps understand. When a voter has to try and understand too much, they vote in the 4, 5 & 6 realm, as the bulk of the scores on yours reflect. Pet pictures seem to generally score a bit lower too, now adding a second strike in a way. That image means 100x more to you than anyone else here, and becomes self-explanitory in your world, but may not click in a voter's eyes. Perhaps a more powerful title may have helped convey that the dog wasn't just closing it's eyes, with something like "Blind at birth".
Technically, the focus is a little soft in my opinion for something with a minimal dof. Sharper features in the face may have also helped. Composition & framing is decent, with it not being a dead-center mug shot.
Remembering who is scoring these challenges is to understand what to produce if you only care about a high vote:
Eye candy and wow factor always seem to come out on top.
When the power goes off on your PC, you still have a touching print to look at,
worth far more than other people's opinions and lack of compassion.
:)
Edit=typos - onE of thees daZs I neeed to lern to sPell betr.

Brad - I can completely understand where you are coming from. I just do not think it deserved 1'2 or 2's at all! I can see where those who did not take time to really perceive what the image was showing them would give a 3.
You're right though - I still have a photo that is dear to me, and worth more than any DPC'er could appreciate.

None of us ever do, and if you want to put it in perspective, go into any challenge, and look at the top ten placers. They almost ALWAYS have a bunch or 1's, 2's & 3's. A few really don't hurt the overall score as much as we get affected by them. I try and ignore them. |

Hey, yours was probably my second favorite image in the challenge. Definitely met the challenge 200%. Absolutely fabulous image. |

Any score is relative. I tend to reserve 1-3 for photos that are really aweful, and should not have been posted. But, given the high standard of photos here, some people might have to be pretty impressed to give a 5, giving generally lower scores. Others might sit with their mouse on the 2, and keep clicking until a photo jumps out at them. There's many different voters, and many ways to vote. Not everyone will ever agree on a photo.
Also remember that others will never value your photos as highly as you do. I find that a photo that makes me stop long enough to look at it will generally end up with a better score that I was originally intending. I have even found what I though was a bad photo, and stopped to comment, but in the time it takes to write the comment, the photo grows on me, or something new dawns, and I end up giving a good score.
Just play the averages, and try not to set your heart on one photo. :)

I am just curious...I never expect my photos to get a ribbon...I'm here to learn and try to get better...but I didn't expect to be in a foot-race for a brownie with this one...I think the image itself is sharp and well composed.
I received a handful of comments, with only a couple of them having anything useful on the negative side to say about the image.
I don't understand if people just completely didn't understand that darkness to me as a photographer means I need to use my flash (basic concept I know but maybe everyone was just looking to be scared by the pics in the challenge), of if my photo just sucked it up.
Anyways, as I said, I'm a middle of the road scorer on challenges, generally tickeled with a 5.0, but when i come in with a 3 average, I'd like a little more constructive criticism so I can improve next time.

I gave it an 8, I thought for sure I'd see it near the top in the finish. I'm sure that guy is a cannibal ! The lighting & model are really well done. I don't think there was an entry with lighting any better than this. The score on this one is very surprising. :-(

These were my top picks for ribbons that, IMO, scored much lower than they should have:

I've calibrated both my monitors at work and home as best I can. I still can't get the last two darkness boxes to show much of a difference. So I think some of the issue might be not just people not calibrating monitors, but also not being able to fully calibrate their monitors.
Hmm, X-mas isn't toooooo far away. Maybe time for new monitor in 6 months.
