I need some help. Photography has been a hobby of mine for quite some time, but it is just that, a hobby. Now my sister wants me to take engagement photos of her and her fiance. I have no idea how to pose them, what elements to include, exclude, etc. Any ideas? |

I am by no means an expert but I'll put in my 2 cents. First ask them to wear similar clothes. For example if she's wearing a white shirt and blue jeans, he should me wearing a white shirt and blue jeans. Coordinated clothing is much more pleasing to look at than a miss match of colors. Don't put them in any stiff poses, let them interact with each other and be relaxed, this will make for much more intimate portraits and they won't look like forced. Use a reflector or fill flash. Let them be themselves and try to capture some candids, they sometimes turn out to be the best ones.
Here's a couple examples of how you could pose them:
Example 1
Example 2
These, by the way, are NOT engagement photos. I hope this helps.

Wow those are very nice, lots of good ideas.
I wish I had the samples my wife and I did (long after we were married) but I can tell you to go with chiqui74's idea of the matching clothes and let them be them. We both wore blue jeans and long sleeve button down white shirts. We did some posed shots but then also played in those poses. Most turned out best b/w but since we had simple colors on the color images were very nice too.
Good luck, have fun and remember...it's digital, if you don't like it delete it and shoot again.

Button-down white dress shirts always look great. Classy but sexy when need be. |

I would pose them so as to downplay certain features that the couples would dislike seeing in photos...
I did my first "practice" couple shoot this weekend and while we were looking over the results, I was given some advice...
My SIL, who still has some pregnancy "stuff", mentioned more then once about how a few of my shots didn't hide her pregnancy "stuff".
I learned that I need to be cognizant of such things. At the time, I was focusing WAY to much on the technical aspects of shooting those images and less on time on the composition.
Anyway, I am still learning. I did get a handful of decent shots though. So, it wasn't a total loss.
I may post a few later this evening. (I got a ton of great shots of their baby though.) |

I'll throw in my examples as well...
Engagement Shoot
Chiqui has some good advice. The hardest part is getting them to relax, warm up to the camera, and have fun so that you can get the best shots that show not just them, but who they are.
This couple was great to work with, and this Friday I have the pleasure of shooting their wedding :-D

Make sure they are touching each other. Hopefully in a comfortable way. (C: Have fun and try to catch the more "intimate" moments. I hate the word posing, cuz to me it entails stiff, fake smiles and looks.

also, when they are holding each other, make sure that they are not slumping on each other, that their backs stay straight and their arms (especially the girl, since she'll be the one to put her hands on his shoulders) aren't so relaxed that they are pulling the other person down. If it's an engagement shoot, make sure you get a few shots where her ring is clearly visible.
I uploaded a few more photos for you.
Cheers,
Kristina
