As many of you know i am looking for a DSLR. I know i go on about it and i am sorry. I have just been looking ebay in the US and i now officially have 23 "watched" items. I cant get over the difference in price. It is looking more and more like i will buy it from the US. Any good ebay stores you can think of??

Thanks
Lisa

Just be carefull Lisa most items will attract import-duty and GST on arrival which bumps up the price but it still works out cheaper.
I have purchased many items via the US usually on Ebay stores and what really surprised me is the prompt delivery once I purchased a new set of golf clubs on a Monday evening and they were at my door the next Friday morning !! I've have had stuff from Sydney that took longer.

Definitley don't forget the Tax & import duty and postage you will have to pay, PLUS the fact that if the camera is damaged or faulty, you have to send it back to the states for replacement. This is more expensive than a local purchase.
On the other hand, I recently bought a lens from the USA, & it was in my hands in Germany in 3 working days. (There was a weekend in the middle).
Luckily I got the camera body locally, as it didn't have a serial number, and had to be replaced.

lentil,
i brought my 300D kit from prodigital2000 from ebay, it cost a total of £411 GBP including import duties and carriage.
I have had this for about 3 months now and you still cannot get this for this price in the UK yet.
prodigital2000 do new items usually on a 1 day listing and take about 2 weeks to deliver into the UK, they are based in Canada.
Hope this helps.

I would be a little bit careful: that chap has a rating of just 14 (the big, reliable companies tend to have ratings in the thousands), he has a couple of so-so ratings (look at comments received from buyers: he has made refunds twice on no-sales resulting in a negative (though withdrawn) and a neutral rating). His previous sales are printers and scanners, not cameras.

Though I am more used to the UK site, I cannot see details of PayPal purchase protection: this normally insures you against non-delivery of product. I have been stung once before on EBay and had to rely on the PayPal insurance to get my money back. If it is being offered, you need to make sure that the coverage limits are sufficient to cover the cost of the item you are bidding on.

I would probably only bid if the price were extremely competitive, and I was feeling like taking a bit of a risk. Given that you would be several thousand miles away, you will have very limited means of redress. If you could not afford to lose the cash, I would not bid on this item. There are plenty of other tried and trusted sellers out there!

Just did some calculations for Prodigital2000
300d - $1085.00
350 Body only $1263.00
350 with lens $1417.00

All of these include delivery, insurance, 3 yr warranty and GST.
They are still cheaper than buying here.
Compared here 300d $1399
350 $1899 with lens, dont sell body only here.

What do you guys think??

I went to the customs website and from what i can understand digital cameras dont have import tax. If any aussies know this to be false, please let me know

I believe the same is true in the UK.

well then, so far prodigital is the best. :) Man i wish it could happen this second. LOL
I am also "watching" a 20mm 2.8 lens, so far the bidding is only $20, LOL, i know that wont last. Any feedback on that lens?

You have to pay import duty on digital cameras in the UK. When I bought my 20D from Hong Kong it was properly declared and I paid £40 import duty - no idea how they worked out that amount as the appropriate duty to pay. But it was not too much and they guys who sold it (and declared it properly on the packaging) had agreed to refund me any import duty costs, and they did so very promptly.

The shop I bought from was DigitalRev on Ebay - very good service.

Not sure about the position down under, but I would be surprised if it was very different.

I'd be carful here. Yes the person has a 100% approval rating, but only 14 referrals. Also, only been a member since April of this year. I would buy from someone who has been in the business longer who also has an approval rating of over 99%.

When I emailed Customs & Excise they said differently.

Further more, how much was your camera?

In the UK standard import duty is 4% and VAT is 17.5%. £35 certainly isn't 20.5% of the camera value. I wonder if you just got charged duty at 4% and they waived the VAT?

On lenses and such you definitely do get charged 20.5%, as I have been on many occasions.

Are those prices in US Dollars?????

If so that seems quite high. I bought my 350 for $850.00 US on Amazon.com. The Price was thru Adorama and I have heard that they call and try to sell you accesories, but I did not have that problem.

Edit: Body only price.

You might want to check that with C&E, as when I emailed them I'm pretty sure I was told you shouldn't have to pay it. At the very least you have a £145 personal limit where you're charged no duty or VAT. If you went through a large courier, they may have charged it as a matter of course. When I get stuff via UPS they actually forward-pay my duty and VAT to C&E and then I pay UPS. Obviously UPS don't really care if you shouldn't be charged it on a relatively small package.
