Saturday I played the role of "assistant photographer" for the first time ever... It was a little disconcerting in that her focus was always on the primary photographer (rightly so) and so the shots that I got seldom had her looking at me. Still... I think I managed to come away with some pretty good shots.

Please take a look and let me know what you think.

Too many pictures to post, so here is the portfolio.

A great set of photos, I like the relax, fun atmosphere...such a change from the normal posed shots. All appear well focused and exposed. Was it all the primary photogs poses, or did you have any input.

Favourite has to be the shot on the steps with the trainers! Great work.

I provided only minimal feedback, mostly in the way of lighting or in some cases a preference for a slightly different pose. But for the most part, I tried to keep a low profile and only take the secondary shots (different angles from what the other photographer was shooting).

The site was new to me, and it was my first time working with someone (I struck out on my own never having had a tutor). So I felt like I came away having learned a lot!

The bubblegum shot is certainly not one I've seen in any wedding albums so far. Nice, informal shot.

Also the shots of her with the basketball and her basketall shoes. These were intended to show her personality rather than just be your standard "bridal picture". Kind of fun, huh?

You should be very proud of them....they're great!!! Especially love the basketball, the bb shoes and the bubblegum.

I kind of liked the bubblegum shot too, except I didn't care for the color of the gum. I liked a more redish pink color (hopefully you won't mind my playing with it).

I really like the others too. Good Job. Also, remember you don't always want someone looking directly at the camera.

Good idea. Yes, I agree, the pink does look better. (all I did was desaturate and then paint the original color back in)

I'm still learning all the post-processing stuff. You seem to have better pictures to start with than me.

I like this one IMG_2893-01a.jpg (great portfolio shot).

Being assistant photographer gives you a lot of freedom. The first time I did it I was irritated that the bride wouldn't look directly at me too, but now that I'm the main photographer I wish they'd look at me LESS...capturing spontaneity and real emotion is harder when they keep looking at you and smiling for the camera.

You also have little to worry about as the second photog, I say take advantage of that :-)

One other big advantage... while the main photographer was setting up his shots, I was shooting candids (I didn't include any in my portfolio here, but I got several that I really liked).

That's for sure... it was the most relaxed shoot I've ever been on!
