If the background is white, is it ok, under Advance Rules, to turn it black in Post editing?

In some cases I believe it is OK as long as you are just replacing a color not pixels(image). See the photograph below from the architecture II challenge and look at the photographers comments. I asked that the picture be validated because I was interested in change a blow out sky if it was allowed. The SC validated this image. NOTE: As you can see the photographer was not trying to do anything wrong as he stated his steps in the details area and the SC deemed it to be legal. So I believe you can change color in some case.
Here is the pic.

As a result of the SC ruling I replaced the blow out (white)sky on my entry to the pink challenge. It was not asked to be validated and here it is. I took it to be OK because of the above example.

In some cases, it may be ok. Without the SC seeing the pic though, I cannot validate that your pic would be legal. If you are questioning something, it's best to send it to a SC member, with before and after editing pics, and get an official ruling on the editing.

Ok how about this example:
A studio portrait taken against a pure white sheet background. In photoshop, I select just the background and decrease the lightness until the white turns to black. The person stays the same.
How about that ?

What you do is usually more important than how you do it, though in this case I think it would be fine. Changing colors has been ruled legal in the past with few restrictions. In advanced editing, a featureless white background can be made gray, blue, black, whatever... as long as it remains featureless. If you try to put a gradation or rainbow into a space that was originally a "blank" solid color, it will probably be DQ'd, but shifting existing colors should be OK. As always, if you have any doubt you can ask an SC member (or several) for an opinion before submitting.

Oh I see; so such an action would be legal under the Advance Rules. Thanks!
