Hi everyone, here's my story:
A year ago I didn't know what SLR meant. I then took a photgraphy class and surprisingly became very interested in it.
Bought a Nikon N80, setup a darkroom and have been shooting film since then (all black and white), a lot of it. I found myself in my little darkroom several hours a day until recently when my camera bag along with two lenses were stollen.
So now I am looking into digital, because 1) The bulk of my so called equipment is gone and I can start fresh and 2) I find the developing/enlarging process a bit incovenient when there is digital out there (despite the great quality of film).
I have looked at a few cameras, mainly Canon Rebel XT, Nikon D70s and Canon D20. However Nikon just released the D50. I can not find many reviews at all on this camera and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with it.
I would definitely consider the D70 from the Nikon family moreso than the D50 if it wasn't for the fact that I have a 2 Gb SD card (D50 takes SD).
Any other suggestions are welcome. I shoot anything and everything, landscapes, portraits, action (Nikon D50 only 2.5 fps :( versus 5fps of 20D).
I am really not sure which camera to get. My budget is $1500.
Also would you recommend getting a body and a decent lens or does the kit lens suffice?
Sorry if this post isn't all that coherent, perhaps it's an indication of my frustration.

if your budget is only $1500 then I would consider
the Canon 350XT for $940 with 1GB lexar 80x cf card and
the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 XR AF for $360 it's a fast lens and a good start, do NOT by the camera with the kit lens, after you try a decent lens the kit will never get out of the bag ;)
for sports you might get the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III for only $150
that makes it $1450 at BH, great starter kit, the long lens is a budget, nothing great but gets you started, the tamron is a keeper, the lexar card is great, got one my self. |

Thank you for the replies. Any comparison ideas between the Nikon D50 and the Canon Rebel XT? |

I like Nikon, but if you are comparing specs, the Rebel XT is a better than the D50, but a bit more expensive.

i to am a nikon fan. but i was raised that way.....1 thing is many ppl. have told me and i find to be very true is that the camera is only as good as it feels.
in other-words if u pick it up and it doesn't feel right in your hand it won't do u much good as far as hand hold photog. goes
the reason i mention this is the size of the reb xt. when we 1st got it in at wolf every women who came in loved it but more guys complained that it didn't feel like a camera to them.
now this isn't ment to be sexist or anything like that but it is much small and with the 18-55mm lens on i can rest muy thumb on the backand index fingure on the front of the lens.
now granted i'm also 6'2" but i don't think i could shoot with it.
(it would be like trying the ride a kids bike)
anyway that is my 2¢
if u can't descide between them go with what feels right and u won't regette it
_bran(btw nice to here that there are other ppl. who still have a home darkroom [never give up film])do_

I read many good reviews about the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 XR AF.
I was thinking I could get Canon 20D along with this lens and worry about other lenses later. I would get an adapter similar to the one colda mentioned for my SD card.
That would put me at or slightly over $1500 for now which is fine with me. I can get more accessories later, is it a good idea to spend a bit more for the 20D?
I mainly like the 5 frames per second burst of 20D. |

What are you planning to use it for? If you are just using it for portrait/studio work, the 5 frames per sec is really irrelevant. If you are want to do action sports, you need fast AF and fast frame rate.
You can decide which glass line you want to get into and then get a little less expensive body and more glass. Then you can upgrade the body later.
That's my 2 cents anyway.
