Am going to a fireworks display tonight. Has anyone got any suggestions about settings and any other helpful hints? |

Don't forget a small flashlight so you can see your camera controls in the dark.

IMO a tripod is a must have essential.
Rememnber the wind will blurr the photograph. Too long of a shutter speed will get alot of blurred shots. These are action shots in the dark. Shoot multiple frames if your camera allows that. A 50mm lens will be as wide as you need, given that you are a couple hundred yards back of the firing tubes. These were shot with a 24-85 Nikkor. Do not recall the settings, but gaurantee they were tripod mounted. Likely ISO 400 at f/5.6-8

for a good fireworks shot, you need mirror lockup, remote switch, tripod and a good dark place to be at with no wind :)
this is one of my shots from last newyear, f22, 32sec, iso100.
