I have some 35mm lenses that my father gave me years ago .. i figured i'd dig them up - i'm wanting to upgrade to the canon rebel xt and i was wondering if i gave the specs on these lenses if anyone could tell me if i would be able to use them on the rebel xt
... Vivitar is the brand ...
around the rim it says
AUTO TELEPHOTO No. 28415103 55mm 135mm 1:2.8
and the second one is
AUTO TELEPHOTO No. 28410807 62MM 200mm 1:3.5
I also have a Minolta MC ROKKOR-X PG 1:1.4 F=50MM 3807950
but i dont think that the canon would fit that ...
any help would be awesome ... thanks everyone!

Third party lenses are made to fit specific camera brands. This is referred to as the mount. If the vivitar lenses have a canon EOS mount then they will work. Otherwise they won't.
EOS lenses are also referred to as EF mount lenses. Older canon (or third party with canon mount) are referred to as FD or MF lenses.
If the vivitar lenses have a Minolta mount why not consider the Minolta DSLR.

thanks for your reply .. i'm not quite sure what kind of mount they have ... I have a minolta now and i havent been too pleased with it lately ... it seems like cacnon has the most versatility with options of lenses and all .. so i was thinking of going that route.
how can i figure out what kind of mount it has? visit my local wolf camera or camera shop with the lenses? or is there a better way?

Since you have one Minolta lens you could try comparing the mount on the Vivitar lenses to the mount on that one however all mounts may be so similar that might not be conclusive.
Going to your local camera store with the lenses probably wouldn't hurt. It would provide you with the opportunity to try out different cameras as well.
Also, how the 7i performs may have no bearing on how the DSLR performs.

I'm not sure if the lenses would fit? There may be a special attachment or mount that you may be able to purchase to make them fit.
You could always take the lenses with you to a quality camera shop and ask a knowledgeable person if there is anyway to make them fit... and honestly, if you are willing to upgrade to the Canon XT, I'm sure the sales person would be more than willing to help you out and possibly let you try to fit them onto the camera before you purchase.
I have the Canon EOS Rebel 300 DSLR... and i've compared all of the specs with the XT... not much difference at all to be honest... the XT has a little higher megapixels and the processor is a bit faster and download time to the computer is a bit quicker... but other than that... not much difference. If you want to save a few hundred dollars and put that towards a lens that will work on the canon, I reccomend the camera that I have... I love it and I don't regret buying it over the XT. |

If I wasn't with Minolta, I'd go for the XT because of the lower noise levels at high ISOs. |

I should add that although the Minolta lenses are very expensive, and there is more variety and versatility with the Canon range, I do get an image stabilised 12-24mm lens, a stabilised 50mm F1.7 lens and a stabilised 105mm macro lens, which I couldn't get with Canon. If low light shooting is important to you, bear this in mind! |

thanks everyone for your replies ... one of the main reasons i'm leaning towards the canon range is because i'm in Florida and my Minolta just seizes up in the heat ... I have a canon powershot a40 also - and that will work all day ... granted i know they are different cameras and types .. but i have had no problems with the canon and my minolta well ... has almost bit the dust ... the minolta is broken .. some how the focusing ring has cracked and i can not use any manual features of the camera .. and to zoom - well i have to physically pull out the lens from the body to zoom .. no more twisting ... and the only way to get it fixed is to mail it to minolta because of the model ... and my canon ive beat up and used and my boyfreind has used on construction job sites and we've had no problems ... luckily for now the automatic features of the minolta still work .. or i'd really be bumming cause i cant take and photos.
I'm just starting to learn more about what which lens does what and all ... i'd like to get into it more ... I love shooting macros and landscapes ... i know .. kinda like 2 extremes ... but knowing this - if anyone has any suggestions i'm all ears :)

I don't know if this is very helpful, but...
... if one of the lenses is a Minolta lens and hence Minolta fit, then wouldn't the other two be?

That Minolta lens wouldn't fit on the 7D.
But IMO the 7D is one of the most robust DSLRs you can buy.
I don't know about the DiMAGE 7i, but the body the 7D is based on is a prize-winning film camera that was praised for it's indestructability, and is one of the main reasons I went for it.
I do tend to hear more stories of Canon cameras biting the dust than Minolta, but maybe that's just because much more people have them!
Nonetheless, I do frequent 7D forums a lot, and they do seem indestructable... apart from some initial quality control issues. If you have a camera without backfocusing issues, then the chances are you'll be okay. |
