I've been building a lot of multi-layer mosaics lately (is it a phase?) and I've been wondering if there is a way to select more than one layer at a time to apply global changes to them. The main reason is to be able to quickly change layer styles (outlines and dropshadows mostly) on multiple layers (up to 365 layers for my PaD mosaic) without having to individually paste the style into each layer.

For instance: my PaD mosaic has a black background, but maybe I'd like to see what it might look like with a white background and a small drop shadow with a black outline on each tile. Anyone know a fast way in photoshop to do this?

Is there another way beside adding a style to each layer to accomplish this?

Thanks,
Ara

So, I figured out a way to do what I want. Once the image is complete, copy all the tiles into one layer then hide the original tile layers. Now you only need to create 1 layer style.

The way I do is as follows:
1-hide the layers u don't want to apply desired group effects (say, shadow)
2- all the layers u want to apply effect remain visibel.
3- add a new layer and drag it to the top. Name it for ur convenience.
4-press "alt" key and at the same time click on the tiny arrow on the top right cornor of the layer pallete. Now choose " merge visible".
5- all selected/visible layers are now on the new layer. You can now apply desired effects and at the same time u have all the separate layers as well , in case u wanna go back to any of them. You can make them visible any time or just discard them when u finally flat image.

Hope this help. I had something else in mind to write, but now I forgot :D Perhaps later :)
Yup, about changing the background color, its better to always start ur canvas as transparent and then add layers in different colors to check which one would u like as background. this prevents having background color added to any merged layers.

Actually you can select multiple layers without going through the steps you've stated.

1) Select one layer apply a layer style
2) Select all layers to which the style is to apply
3) apply the style

I can't remember off hand what the key strokes are but can look it up when I get home.

Thanks, Nonage, that's a better way than I had.

cpanaioti, I'd love to know how to select multiple layers. Thanks.

Ara, I just looked it up in my book (since I don't know myself).

It says this about PS CS: "Photoshop does not let you select more than one layer at a time. But you can LINK multiple layers, which is photoshop's way of binding their relative size and placement. You can move or transform linked layers together. You can also align linked layers."

However, I THINK that PS CS2 let's you ctrl-click to select multiple layers.

I apologize if I got anything wrong, I have no idea what I'm talking about, just trying to help.
