any one try this this out yet?
Microsoft released a 'Powertoy' for Windows XP, that lets you view and print (not edit) RAW files natively in Windows.
Anyone try it out? any issues?

Warnings:
You must have a legit copy of windows - it checks before you can DL the software.
NOT dial up friendly - the download is 49Mb.
Be back in a bit with an opinion...

You can choose not to validate your copy of Windows and still download it. Same as MS Antispyware.

It don't work.
Supposedly, in a folder in Thumnail view the RAW images will be displayed. you can also right click and choose Preview.
the first does not work, and the second..no Preview option in the pop up menu.
I had to reboot twice to get windows to come back, and all for naught at this point.

Also have any of you checked out the Beta of Microsoft Acrylic... It's looking pretty close to a(nother) PS type Image Editor with some of the coolness that is in Digital Image Pro... I'm hoping they don't ditch the DIP line for this heavy learning curve (ps users would be able to navigate it) stuff... Actually looks pretty good for a Beta.

Why is Microsoft's PowerToy so big? It's basically just a thumbnail browser for RAW formats. It's not a converter, nor does it have any editing tools.
You can get RAW Shooter essentials 2005 for free. It's about one tenth the size of the Microsoft download and has a whole lot more features. You do have to register and give a valid e-mail addy to get the download, but that's a lot less hassle than jumping thru Microsoft's hoops.
What all is in that program that it needs to be ten times as big as a more full-featured program?

It seems to have the .NET framework packaged in with it, so it's probably 45mb of framework and 4mb of program or something equally silly.
Now correct me if I'm wrong here, but I thought one of the major points of a "framework" was that you only had to download it once and then a whole bunch of programs could use it?
Microsoft, meet mister clue, you obviously haven't been introduced.

Anyone have trouble deleting files after the install? I had a file that XP wouldn't let me delete (was the first file on a CF card fresh from my cam) it also kept me from moving files. I had to kill explorer.exe just to be able to erase the card.
Is there any other way to "unlock" a file that XP thinks is in use? |

Nope! XP pops up a message telling me a program may have that file open and to please close the file and try again. Of course no program has the file open. Couldn't even format, I got the same message. |

Have you Canon dSLR peeps updated your Canon Digital Professional from the original that shipped with your Cam?
Version 1.6.1 is a lot better then the 1.0 that shipped with most of the EOS'ers.

I finally got it working...
Clicked the link yesterday, it DL'd and installed. OK, something installed. .NET probably. Had to reboot. Nothing changed...well, my quick launch icons were gone, and when i turned them back on they were re-ordered.
Today, the computer tells me there is a security update for .NET and i need to reboot again...
I go back to this thread...check the folder and no files there...so i install it from the downloaded file i got yesterday..which i KNOW i ran yesterday...
and now it works.
