how about from now on the challenges just get stated like this...
"shoot a photo of something metal."
"shoot what darkness means to you."
"shoot what you would see in your fantasy world."
"shoot a photo with an apple in it"

I don't see how it would change things to be briefer.
Folks would still say:
"that paperclip is nice, but it's not enough metal"
"darkness? you must be one strange cookie"
"fantasy? i don't think that's anyone's fanatasy"
"sorry, wood, plastic and otherwise fake apples need not apply"

(Just feeling cynical today. Sorry.)

OK,

this is where the language of challenges need to be tightened up as I have mentioned in a web sight suggestion.

the discription of the "metal" challenge is as stated:

If it's made of metal (you know, usually shiny, good conductor of heat and electricity), you can photograph it for this challenge. Whatever metal object(s) you use should be the primary subject. There is a lot of metal in the world, so the key here is being creative.

So, the issue is this....

metal is not always "shiny". Metal can degrade. It can rust, it can turn color, it does stuff that mother nature loves to do that man has not control over.

SOOOOO, is this a challenge on just "shiny" metal, or is it a challenge on all types of metal.

My thinking is that someone was trying to come up with a challenge where maybe a flower, egg, baby, sunset etc., etc., might not be an "appropriate" entry since the metal must be that main/primary subject...shiny ...rusty...pitted chrome...whatever..as long as it is METAL. : )

What about the metal strings on a guitar used in playing heavy metal music?

Now we'll see a rusted old car with a baby looking out the window holding a flower. Don't forget to desat the car.

You can do it.... but you gotta change the things around... like a naked car with a painted baby (in sunset colors) and an eggcovered driver... who's eyes are reflecting the colors of rust OH yeah and desat something on it .. .

Why are we being so anal...if there's metal in it it meets the challenge period! Now go take some photos with something metal in it.

Actually, there IS a way to make it even clearer and that's to take out that bit explaining what metal is. Does anyone seriously think there is anyone around who does NOT know what metal is???

I think it's clear enough as it stands, myself, so I'm just being pedantic about your assertion that there's "no way" to make it clearer still. :o)

Doesn't metal have to be the key subject of the image and not just in the image? If that's not the case then it's basically a free study where you add a piece of metal, just because.

Does sunblock with zinc oxide count?

holding a kitten over the 'important' parts.

Now if you can get the person, kitten and baby to have shiny metal non-alloy piercings, you get a 9. For a 10 you need a sunset too.

And, just to put everyone on notice, I plan to vote down anyone who mis-pronounces "aluminum" in their title.....

Chemically, Hydrogen is a metal ... I don't think many people would recognize that so easily.
