I gave up even waiting/hoping/looking at the shipping status from Dell. But sure enough, it came today! It only took 2 months, and a day of Hell on the phone with them.

Now, as usual, with nothing sealed, I wonder if Dell sent me a return (which I think is against the rules/laws):
1) The LCD had a small smudge out of the box
2) The battery connections were not pristine, though they were not scratched either
3) The camera had the date set already--it showed 25 hours past the current date (one hour later, the next day)
4) The camera had 4 dust spots on the sensor already, more than I think I've ever seen on my Rebel in almost 7 months of use.

Well, I'm celebrating while wondering this. Took a few pics already. I like the softer shutter sound, but it doesn't feel as good as the rebel in the hands (as others have said). And I ended up with a silver one, even though my original order, and what I wanted was black. Oh well, it is lighter, and I like that!

Thanks Brad.

I was just reading the article about the pro journalist photographer who uses P&S's exclusively; he carries three different cameras (oly's I think), he has redundancy, and it's still lighter than an SLR and lenses!

As I'd been awaiting the XT, I've been thinking about that more. There's certainly something to be said for a point and shoot!

Here's some reasons to be happy with your P&S:

5) You never have the wrong lens on (assuming you have one with a good range), or miss the shot while changing the lens
4) You aren't embarassed when you sell the shot of the space ship only to find out it was dust on your sensor
3) You can carry it in a fanny pack rather than a backpack
2) Superb Depth of Field for landscapes and indoor low light shots
1) You are less likely to be mugged than the guy with the white lens ;)

Personally, I also think you are on a good track seeing what you can do with a low end camera. All such exercises lead only to personal growth (even with the frustration that comes with it.) My photography teacher in high school always said that a small p&s ◙was the best way to learn composition. And the P&Ss back then were pretty awful ;)

Though I missed your post about why you got rid of your Oly--sold it? I think it (and the photographer behind it) took some pretty outstandning shots!

Congratulations!

I don't know about the other items you mentioned, but my Rebel XT was set exactly the same for the date right out of the box.

Have fun!

Thanks Lisa and Bonnie. Now I have a pretty compact little kit with good coverage range that I can pretty easily carry:

Nice little Canon Rebel XT
- Canon 10-22 EF-S
- Sigma 18-125 F/3.5-5.6
- Canon 70-300 EF F/4.5-5.6 IS DO

Regards--Neil
