Does renaming a file cause the EXIF information to be modified?

Usually, I copy over files from CF card to hard disk using copy/paste.
I noticed WinXP has a camera/scanner wizard that copies over files, but renames them. Just wondering if the renamed file would serve as proof of original.

Just renaming shouldn't touch the data (picture or exif) within the file.

If you open it up in an editor and re-save or save as... it may manipulate some of or remove the exif data.

I think the file name is also recorded in the EXIF, so changing the name of the actual disk file will create a deviation from what's in the EXIF. It shouldn't make a difference but might want to let the SC weigh in just to be safe.
