Turns out yido was right with his prediction - the lens that I just purchased off eBay (Sigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro EX) is not immediately compatible with my camera. From what I understand, I can send it to Sigma for free and they will 'rechip' it. I'll give them a call tomorrow, but was curious if anybody has had experience with this.
How long does it take? Have you run into any difficulties with this process?
From what I have heard, Sigma will rechip it for free (other than shipping it to them.. do I pay the return shipping as well?), so that's a good thing.

I had a similar problem with my Sigma 28-200. I had used it for 4 months before it went funny. They rechipped it FOC, but it took about 2 weeks.

Brian,
How many times did I tell you!!!
"Error 99" means that the lens is fatally flawed.
Seeing as you are a starving student, I'll take it off your hand for $20, just to be a nice guy and all. :P
All kidding aside, you need to ship it to them with the camera you will be using it with (EOS 300).
Sigma will rechip it and mail it back to you for free. It'll probably take anywhere from 2-4 weeks from what I hear.
This just means that your lens is a few years old, made prior to introduction of the DR. It doesn't mean much more than that.
Good luck and let me see the lens after you get it back, especially if you join us for some shooting in LA.

Soudns good.. I didn't get around to calling them today - but I really need to send it back with my camera? I can't just tell them it's the 300D? Bummer :(
edit: Of course you can use it next time we meet up.

Sorry,
Didn't mean you need to send them your camera, just a note saying what camera you will be using it with.
Don't send the camera, just a description.
Sorry for the confusion.

I commented on this exact thing on this thread:

But the long and short of it is that you need to actually speak to a real live technician and verify that they have the necessary parts on hand before you send them your lens.
