I'm looking to upgrade my camera to a rebel xt in the next few weeks and have already settled on a canon 50mm 1.4 usm for close up/indoor and will probably get the kit with the 18-55 lens but I want a long lens. I'm not going to do a whole lot of long distance photography and I usually will have a monopod with me so I want something cheap er. inexpensive. is the canon 75-300 ok for this price range or is there something better (with at least a 400mm equiv) |

I've heard that too is there anything by sigma or another company that's sharper at 300mm or a 300mm prime (for $300? I can laugh at myself for thinking that) |

Here are the challenge images that were taken using this lens:
75-300mm f4.0-5.6 USM III
The problem with it is that at 300mm its maximum opening is 5.6 which does not produce a good bokeh, but rather mediocre soft image.
I thought it was good until I got a 70-200mm L lens. It is so much sharper than the 75-300 that you can easily get to the 300mm zoom by cropping and get a sharper image in the end anyway. But that's over $300 (actually, you can get a used 70-200mm f/4 L lens on eBay for under $500)
Maybe you can trade the 50mm f/1.4 with 50mm f/1.8 and then you'll be able to get the 70-200mm f/4 instead of the 75-300mm f4-5.6 USM III for the same total amount. Just a thought.
Good luck!

I have the IS version but from what I've read the optics are about the same. You can get sharp pictures at 300mm if you're not focusing on infinity and the aperture is set at around f11.

Sigma 70-300 4-5.6 APO Super Macro II, under $200 new on ebay, about $220 from b&h. (must be the APO version!).
Excellent lens.

if you captured that " blue bird face" image with the sigma 70-300 I might have to get it over the cannon. |

Arguably, the Sigma 70-300 APO is optically the best consumer grade telephoto zoom that reaches 300mm. I sold mine to get the Digma (DG version of the Bigma), but I've used it extensively at 300mm at maximum aperature without any problems.
You might want to wait a bit for the upcoming DG version, you can see it on the German site, I expect it to show up in the US soon.
I would not recommend the Canon 75-300, it is soft past 200mm, has lots of CA, and it has a blue color to it on one lens I was testing out.
