So I have had this bit of hardware for a week now and had a little chance to play. I got the kit lens (cause it was $40 more than the body only and figured it was worth having for that much until I figure out the longer term short zoom range) but am mostly using a VERY old 35-105 and a fairly old 100-300 (no IS). This is deliberate as I am very familiar with these 2 having been on my 630 for the last 15 years.

Here are some thoughts so far in no particular order - by all means any suggestions / comments would be great.

- For some reason the ability to change the ISO seems to have jumped out as a very useful thing. The noise on the higher ISO's seem pretty good to me - better than faster film from what I have seen.

- I have decided that I HATE HATE that rubber plug thing that hides the connection to the computer! I am going to run down to the computer shop and buy a flash card reader so I don̢۪t need to deal with it -> suggestions on things to look for - speed?

- I am a little disappointed with the colour saturation. I have only used the S230 in digital before and I know that camera processes the image heavily whereas the 20D is more neutral. I think this is just as I am not used to touching up the images after loading to the computer. I have set the parm1 for the short term until I get my head around that.

- The much smaller/duller image in the view finder took a little to get used to but it's fine after a bit.

- I have also found that I now keep it on continuous shot rather than one shot – the hey it’s only memory justification. Not sure if this is a good or bad habit yet but it does tend to get some unexpected shots at times with the kids.

- I am at a loss on the walk-around lens for this camera (the 35-105 is obviously too long now). I am not a fan of the EF-S lenses since they don’t work on a lot of other cameras and I would prefer to stick to normal EF lenses (hey I can still use my 15 year old lens and I doubt that I will say that about the EF-S in 15 years time but I could be wrong). Everything is a little too long but I plan to try out something starting around 24mm – I don’t tend to do a lot of wide-angle (no super wide) stuff and I have the kit lens for that anyway.

Anyway, just some thoughts (essay?). They will not doubt change in the next month or two.

As to color saturation and sharpness for those coming to dSLR from P&S I keep this chart around:

My first week with first dSLR I wondered what the heck was going on...blamed it on the lens, body neighbors whatever... but until I understood that you gotz to set it up for the way you like to shoot pics will be soft and flat by design to give more creative room in the digital darkroom... Point and Shoots (I still have my Powershot Pro1) are designed to pop the CF into one of those funky prints and print straigth away... no touch up...you print what the camera saw.

Three weeks down the road come back and tell us what you think...I bet you will be a whole lot happier...

If you need more color get in there in the presets and bump Saturation a notch or two. (I also bumped sharpness myself)

Good idea on the card reader. If you have a firewire port on your machine, I strongly suggest a firewire reader like the Lexar RW-019. I recently bought one, and found it's more than four times as fast as my previous (USB 2.0) reader, moving over 9 megabytes per second.

I'm in a similar boat as you. I have had my 20D for just less than a month. For the first few weeks I played with it and tried to get used to some of the basic settings and adjustments.

Was not happy with how the photos were showing on my pc - was shooting RAW. Conversion was a problem. So, in order to get better use of the camera before my first major day of shooting (DC) I took someone's advice and switched to JPG and bumped the settings in camera to better mimic the point and shoot.

I will stick with these settings for a while until I can get decent shots this way and then start reverting to simpler/basic settings.

I also have the kit lens. I definitely need something longer. I don't mind the hookup to the computer - but was used to something very close on my Epson camera.

I have also been contemplating putting it on continuous - and would be interested to hear if this is a good or bad idea.

One of my favorite shots from my recent shoot:

Would love to see what you have taken!

I seen it in the other thread and failed to point out that you did one heck of a job with the kit lens in this shot!

Thank you very much! This one has really grown on me.
