I just bought a 20D. I'm relatively new to photography. I wanted to get a good camera I could grow into. Any ways, I know that the camera allows you to set the shutter speed anywhere from 1/8000 sec - 30 sec. However, isn't there a way to keep the shutter open indefinitely? How do you do that? I'm assuming that capability is used for taking pictures of stars (I can't think of any other uses). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

oh there are plenty of uses for "B" or bulb mode. Light painting for example. You can have a lot of fun with it, be aware though, that with digital cameras very long exposures can result in very noisy looking photographs. |

Or you get a cable release to do the button holding for you.
I bought one on the internet somewhere, way cheaper than the genuine canon one and it works just fine. |

Thanks faidoi and dpakoh. So you're saying I can't just switch it to bulb mode, hold down the shutter, and that's it? I'll have to look into mirror lock up. I'm not sure what that is or how that works. |

You'd never manage to hold down the button without moving the camera, not even if it is on a tripod. You'll have nothing but blurry pics if you try. |

I can't remember where..... I just googled it and picked the cheapest one, some unmarked, unknown brand. Figured losing $15 wasn't the end of the world.
Just check pricegrabber and places like that.
Edited to add: just be careful you don't get one meant for the Rebel...... much cheaper, but not compatible.

When doing long esposures, a cable release is a great thing to have. You can go the inexpensive route, either the 3rd party ones or the Canon RS-80N3, or if you want some really cool additional functionality, look at the TC-80N3.

You may also want to check out the Canon 20Da optimized for astrophotography.
"Display a magnified live view of the subject on the 1.8â LCD monitor." just like everybody's non-dSLR. Of course you can add the new Zigview to your current camera.

Why didn't you just read the manual that came with the camera? The answer to your question and the mirror question are on pages 87/88 in my version which on the back cover says it is current as of 8/04

Alienyst, you bring up a good point. Keep in mind, I had no idea I should be searching for the term "bulb mode." Secondly, I got a response within about 30 seconds of posting my comment...and third, a lot of other people gave me some good feedback regarding cable releases, something I really didn't know much about. Sometimes it pays to openly ask questions :-) |

Certainly it does pay to ask questions, but if you pay the money I know you paid for that camera, it would certainly PAY to read the manual while the batteries are charging and then you can ask more focused questions to get the answers you want instead of need because you do not know about your equipment.
(and it was more like a minute thirty seconds)
