I tried something new for me, and yes I borrowed the idea from a popular person on this site. Good? Not so good? Keep it? Scrap it? Any ideas to make it better?

Thanks!

Is this the first shot on the S2 IS? If so I noticed someone else has that camera. You better hurry to get the highest rated photo.

The shot looks good. Maybe a little lighter.

It was taken with the S2, but posted on Pbase so it won't show up at the site. I wanted to enter construction, but couldn't find anything I was happy with.

Thanks

hmm, i would probably rig the lighting so that only your face is showing, not your neck too, and then try to keep the focus sharp on the eyes

no neck, check this out, a little freaky and not quite what ur trying to do, but still a cool pic //www.deviantart.com/deviation/19148971/

If it were me, I would get rid of the light spot in the eye, sharpen it a bit, and maybe tweak the contrast some. But I like the pic and the neck is not a problem in my eye...supports the half lit face. Perhaps crop a little more off the bottom, but not much. I might straighten out the centerline though, you didn't leave much to work with but using a clone airbrush I was able to adjust the centerline to the center of your face nicely.

Thanks, I'll lighten it a little. It does not need sharpening, I just forgot to sharpen it when I re-sized it to post on the web.

It's for a "portrait" homework assignment for my photo club.

The tones are too grey. Low key is great but is tricky. It looks like the light was dull in general. Could dodge/burn.

The lighting looks ok to me. A little dark but that is probably my monitor. The only issue I have is that the lighting is rather dramatic but the facial expression seems a little.... dull. The mood is set but the impression it leaves is rather lacklustre.

*not my image.

Try the tutorial for doing this here > //news.deviantart.com/article/17530/

Great for keeping alot of textures and stuff with b&w

Nice tutorial, I'll try that. That might help fix the too dark and too gray issues.

I tried it with other facial expressions but they just looked corny to me. I'm not a very good model.

Lighting was a dark room with a light blasting the side of my head, then a quick shutter so only the lit half of the face shows up.

Thanks all for the help/comments.

Please posts results of the Calculations method. I haven't really had any shots that seemed to benefit well with it except my Construction shot.. And not that the calculations method did it, but this is my best resulting contest piece so far..

I think your picture should do well with it, though. Hope to see results soon!
