I am STILL trying to decide to either upgrade my PC or go for an iMac.
So, putting the OSX vs Windows debate aside, which setup would be faster for Photoshop?
PC Option
motherboard:
ASUS A8V DELUXE Socket 939 VIA K8T800 Pro ATX AMD Motherboard
CPU:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester
RAM:
1 GB of CORSAIR ValueSelect
OR
Mac Option
1.8 or 2.0 GHz iMac 20"
I know this is a rather simplistic question, but I already know that OSX is a better OS. But is the Mac hardware up to the PC option?
Thanks,
Chad |

In terms of real-world system responsiveness (launching applications, etc.) both machines will probably feel about the same. If you look at benchmarks, some tests will favor the PC, some the Mac. It comes down to which platform you feel more comfortable with. If you definitely prefer OSX, well then, you've just made your decision, haven't you.
Good luck! |

Thanks strangeghost-
Actually, I've never used OSX, but everything I've read says it is better (except for game availability). And THAT is what is making the decision so hard, because if XP was better, my decision would be easy, considering the iMac is around 4x the cost of the PC option.
But if the performance is similar, then it seems the PC option is best for me, since I have all PC software.

For those of you who are on the edge of your seat, wondering what my decision will be, I chose the iMac.
I got a 20" iMac 1.8GHz off of ebay, with the following software preloaded:
Tiger
Office 2004 for Mac
Photoshop CS
Illustrator CS
FinalCutHD
FinalCut Express
Dreamweaver '04
Fireworks '04
Flash '04
Ilife '05
Quark6 (not sure what this is)
Toast6
FilemakerPro6
Indesign
It still has 7 months of warranty left - all for $1500.

Good choice. I love my Macs. Good deal also if the software is legal (doubtful). By the way Quark6 is page layout software. |

Awe... the pc would have been my choice... you can upgrade the hardware if you wanted to. That's what I dislike about macs.... I think the os is nice though and so is their design in general. But pc's are far more versatile.

Really raw support in Longhorn... I hope Longhorn doesn't cost $700 dollars though with a $500 dollar upgrade. ick. XP was expensive... especially the professional version.

Great choice! I have two friends that recently made the Switch to Mac as well and they are both just loving it! If you ever have any questions, feel free to PM or email for some help.
I think you'll be very happy with your new purchase :-) |

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm sure I will be posting in the Q&A and PMs quite often now :-)
I figured the price difference wasn't so great once you factor in the 20" LCD. With that resolution, I bet it would cost $700 if I wanted one for a PC.
I doubt all the software is legit too, but I didn't ask. Don't ask, don't tell :-) Hopefully I will be able to buy the CS2 upgrade and it will work.
And I have a nice Dell laptop for a PC backup.
