Lens reviews say:
50mm f1.8 is a 3.6 out of 5.

Your other lenses:
Tamron AF 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5 is a 2.19 out of 5.
Canon EF 28-105mm f/4-5.6 II USM is a 2.89 out of 5.
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 II/III USM is a 2.23 out of 5.

Compared to that 50mm, you ARE putting Walmart lenses on your camera!

I find it funny that walmart does carry some of the zooms but not the thrifty 50 from what i've seen lol.

I'm just glad to see that my lens rated at least as high as Dpakoh, I was starting to feel all "white trash and unmotivated Amateurish" after the walmart comment.

I feel much better now, lol. I have inexpensive lens and I'm not ashamed! Might I add that I love my 50mm 1.8 also.

I don't like crappy photos either, I just want to get past the amateur phase before I invest big money in lens I might not be informed enough to select at this time. I'd prefer to not have to upgrade constantly. So I stick with the kit lens for now and a 50mm for fun.

Did that sound bitchy? Hope not, just making conversation :)

The 50mm f/1.8 EF lens may be one of the cheapest lenses in Canon's repertoire but as the reviews show it's incredible value for money.
I can't believe the lens snobbery by certain people here!
I also spent well over $1500 equivalent for my camera but the very first lens I whacked on it was the 50mm. I love it and the optical quality beats the hell out of most of my other $300+ lenses.

Doh! I just got me a 50mm 1.8 on ebay a week or 2 ago. I hope the bidding gets up to over $70 - that's what I paid. It was brand new with warranty. I like it- it's great.

The quality produced by my 28-105 for $300 is far less than the 50mm 1.8 for half the price.

1. I did bid on it.
2. I never said I wouldn't use a low cost lens. The reference I was making was in comparison to the link that showed a nice big different between the 1.4 and the 1.8, and even with the added cost, when comparing two very similar lenses (in terms of features and abilities) that one would be smarter to spend the extra money.
3. I have that lens, and comparing that to a fixed distance lens like a 50mm, and with one lens having f/1.8 and the other having f/4 - not a very good comparison. The shots I take at same focal range with my 28-105 compared to what I used to shoot with the 50mm in the same light don't come out near as clear.

They don't carry the 50mm because it's a prime lens. Most consumers want Zoooooom, so that's what the stores carry. I've called four camera shops in my area and none of them carry the 50mm. Luckily, b&h photo came to the rescue. :)
