Hey all,
My buddy from MA is coming over with his new Canon 20D/battery grip, Sigma 50mm macro, Canon 70-200 f4L, and Tamron 28-75mm XR Di on the above dates and we've got the following tentative plans. Let me know if anyone else is interested in joining us.
Afterall, more the merrier.
7/2 Sat-Santa Monica Pier and Third Street Prominade
(Should be nice beachy pier shots and street Candids)
7/3 Sun- Downtown LA: Start from "Our Lady of the Angels" Cathedral to Disney Concert Hall then down to City Hall building then Olvera Steet and end with Union Station (if I can get photography permits). If we have enough time perhaps Brodway and the garment district.
(Tons of Architecture, Street Scenes, Street Candids)
7/4 Monday- Downtown Pasadena and Rose Bowl Fireworks.
(really nice architecture in Old Town Pasadena and nighttime fireworks)
7/5 Tuesday- Vazquez Rocks: Just north of LA by Magic Mountain. Interesting rock/mountain formations used in many TV shows and movies, especially Star Trek.
(Should be very picturesque rock formations, who knows maybe Capt. Kirks old Bones may be still there)

Yido, sounds like a fun weekend. I'm not around (heading up to Morro Bay) but you also might want to consider going to Devil's Punchbowl while you're up at Vasquez Rocks. It's a little bit off the beaten path but usually deserted on weekdays and has, in addition to similar rock formations as Vasquez, a creek, wildlife and some cool water carved rocks. It's also off of Pearblossom Highway, if you're interested in seeing that.
The visitors center there also has some curious items in their collection, including a Kestrel, that just sits there on a post next to the ranger's desk. Quite a photogenic fellow (no flash of course).
Devil's Punchbowl Flickr Photo Set
Devil's Punchbowl Info and more info here - there are several long hikes you can take and also two very simple, level trails that would get you to the best sites without too much trouble.
Here's a map to get there from Vasquez Rocks - Google Maps - Vaquez to Punchbowl |

beckettboots,
Thanks for the info. How far is the Devil's PUnchbowl from the Vazquez Rocks?

According to that google map it's about 35 miles (just a bit further up the 14 then get off and go through some interesting high desert countryside and some tumbleweed towns). Maybe about an hour but lots of opportunities to stop for photos of stuff if you like deserts and mountain vistas and roadside diners.
It was kinda cool to see that actual Pearblossom highway after seeing the Hockney exhibit downtown a few years back (more about the collage).

I might be down for Sunday, but will have to play by ear as it gets closer. I will have class Mon & Tues, and I go to Santa Monica a lot so I think I'll take a break from that on Saturday - but we'll see :)

Brian,
Yeah, join us Sunday, you can bring your error 99 lens, so I can take it off your hands for... was it $5 or $10??? :P
Let me know, we can do downtown Saturday and my friend and I can to SM on Sunday if that fits your schedule better.
beckettboots,
Thanks for the info. I'll keep a map of it from google and if we don't have our fill of lanscape at Vasquez Rocks, then we'll drive up and shoot some more.

Okay - I'm really not sure yet though, so I'll have to let you know as it gets closer (I'll be taking 2 summer classes, and don't know how tests/homework will be around then). I'd love to get out and shoot some more, though.. WORKING 105mm in tote and all ;)

Brian,
Let me know, we'll be on vacation, so we can do any of the events on anyday, it might be good to do downtown on a weekend for more of a weekend crowd bustle.
How do you like the Sigma Macro? And what are you shooting with it?
It's funny to see fellow LA DPC members lens list grow....
Are you listening Sandman?

I actually haven't received it yet.. actually, the paypal payment hasn't even cleared yet! I have no idea why, since I've never experienced a 'delayed' payment before. I e-mailed them to ask about it, but no response yet. It's supposed to clear tomorrow - but since the guy lives in Fresno, I suppose that I may still get it by Saturday (or Monday, which would be ideal.. since I'll be finishing a project due Monday and have a final that morning - then a break until Thursday). I imagine that I'll do a lot of flower shots - there is a botanical garden here on campus.. after that, I'll expore whatever catches my fancy at the moment - I was using my 18-55 at 55 a lot in order to try for closeups, so I expect to get a lot of use out of this 105. I really want to try some water drop/splash shots, since I always find those cool to look at.
Now, once I graduate and get a little job, I'll be looking to get myself a flash, the 28-75, and whatever other gadgets I come across :P

Brian,
So you're a flower man heh? If you also like shooting moving water, consider getting a ND filter to blur out the water, I hear using high shutter speed to freeze water looks bad, it's better to use a slow shutter speed like 1sec to blur the water with a ND filter.

True - I was thinking more along the lines of stop motion macro though.. you know, water drops plopping up when another drop hits the water type of thing.. I should consider getting a ND thought, as I do want to try some waves/etc at night one of these days.
I like pictures of flowers and insects, but closeups of more unusual things usually pique my interest a bit more.

your gonna need a mighty powerful lighting setup to catch stuff like that using high shutter speed. I think you can use some of the light for the basketball court from UCLA. I don't think they'll mind if you borrow a panel of lighting. ;)

Hmm, well I have a homemade light tent that I made this past weekend.. and a 100w clamp light (with the reflector dish on the sides) and a 250w shop light.. and then whatever 60w lamps i have sitting around my room.. I hope that'll be enough, but I can invest another $10 in 250w more of shop light if necessary :P

Bobby's sisters will be here from the 27th through 3rd, and so I'll be with them all week/end. On the 4th, I think we are getting together with some friends in San Clemente actually.
Your weekend sounds really fun, but with family in town (who we haven't seen in over a year) I won't be able to join you :(
