I am trying to decide on either a digital rebel xt or the 20d. Price is a big factor for me. Are the 20d's performance and specs enough to justify a $500-600 price jump? I've heard great things about both cameras...but I don't want to pay more if the performance increase is not going to be very significant. Any suggestions?

Here's a side by side comparison.

Remember that lenses are as important if not more than the body...

Unless there is some specific feature in the 20D that you must have, I'd recommend the XT as your first SLR. They have same real world performance in terms of picture quality, what you are paying for is a tougher build, more features, and slightly more robust performance.

If those features are worth it to you, then it maybe worth it. If not, then I wouldn't recommend the 20D. Actually the vast number of features might be a bit overwhelming to a person new to SLR's. I'd recommend that you use the extra money to buy some lens which will make a big difference in image quality such as the Tamron 28-75 XR Di with the body only vs the kit lens and slowly grow your skill and equipment.

Either buy the XT or wait for the 30D

350D. Spend the difference on lenses, filters, flash, etc. Then you can decide when teh 30D or whatnot comes out if you want to move up. Robustness is neat and all, but they all break if you drop them just so. The shutter on teh 20D will last longer and may be worth paying extra for...but you'll likely upgrade either camera before that becomes an issue.

I got the 300D. 2 months later out comes the 350D. It has a few feature i think might be useful, but not enough to trade up (what, $300 maybe final cost after selling the 300D?).

The 350 has most of what the 20D had that i wanted (.2 startup time, more MP more FPS and a few minor features) but was not willing/able to pay for, and even at $300 I am not willling to spring for it. The 30D should be enough of a step up, and in a year or so more i will have plenty of accessories, lenses, experience to more fully utilize what the 30D will have to offer.

As for me I'm waiting for the infinityD model.
Titanium body covered in superball rubber (if you drop it, it bounces back up without damage), minus 0.2 second start up (it starts up when you think about using it), 20MP, 300 fps, 100 shot buffer in RAW, 5000 shots per battery charge, focuses faster than the speed of light, 17inch LCD, and of course the kit 8-400mm f1.4L IS lens (so fast and light sensitive, you can shoot it in a black hole).
:)

I want the infinityDs - it has the f1.2 lens, SuperUSM, total weight is 1/2 the weight of the battery (they filled it with helium i hear) and comes with a detachable bluetooth flash with a GN of 500.
Oh, and has an anti theft alarm and PS CS3 built in.

It's in the same category as Rebel-toting tooth fairies.

I bought the 300D and after a couple months was not happy. I bought the 20D and now I'm very happy. The extra features were worth it to me. The speed alone was worth it. These things may not be important for your shooting style though.

my GUESS is that the 30D may come out next fall for the 2006 x-mas season.
That way the 20D had from fall of 2004-fall of 2006. I think most recent digital SLR's have had about a 2 year run. I don't know what they can improve on except price and perhaps buffer speed. I'm happy with my DR but may consider adding a 20D or a 30D if it's good and using the DR as a second back up camera.
Personally, I think the 20D can outperform most photogs so that the photog is the limiting factor if you use a good lens. Unless you want to shoot sports with fast fps and a hugh buffer, I don't really think there IS a need to improve it, except in price.

But who knows, the Canon Infinity D may come out soon as well, I want it in Hello Kitty Pink and not that boring black color.
