OMG, I seriously hope all UK photogs with satellite just watched A Digital Picture of Britain on BBC4.
Tom Ang presented this program, which followed 3 photographers as they were given unfamiliar digital cameras and told to get good photographs in the north of England.
Joe Cornish was given a mobile phone, which he took everywhere attached to a tripod (shakes head!).
Dan Chung (Guardian photographer) was given a point and shoot... watching what he got out of it was incredibly humbling. That guy has so much talent it's untrue.
Ian Berry was given a top-of-the-range Nikon, which he didn't do too well with.
If you haven't seen this programme, I seriously suggest you all check out when it's on and put it in your diary... you can see when it will be repeated here: //www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/features/digital-picture-britain.shtml

Have you seen the competition ? Looks like they modelled it on DPC!!:)
There is a Tom Ang tips page which seems useful - haven't had a chance to read it all yet.
Hopefully a DPC member will win this comp!! (Prize of a camera)

I just loaded up a couple of images, you might recognise my silhouette entry in there ;-)

I thought some of the shots the guy managed to get from the mobile phone were superb...especially the early morning beach pics.

I haven't checked yet, but I'd be wary of the BBC's terms and conditions if you're submitting any valuable photos. I'd want to keep copyright on them.

I can so relate to Mr. Berry (except for that Nikon part)! Wish this would show in the US, it sounds like it would be very interesting to watch.

From the rules:
The BBC reserves the right to publicly display all entries and to publish any images to promote the BBC, and/or the photography competition. Copyright will remain with the photographer.

Not sure about this bit though:
Photographs should not be cropped or altered from the original
NO editing at all? Pffft.

Cheers for the headsup. Unfortunately this means I missed A Picture of Britain on BBC1 (I was watching the Brazil match) and that doesn't seem to be repeated :(

Well I caught repeat last night and was quite impressed.

With the benefit of the hindsight of knowing Bob's views I saw things a little differently ...
The guy with the cameraphone coped well, but went for the easy-win shots - sunsets, a rainbow and a sunrise. The sight of a camera-phone perched on a tripod was very bizarre.
The guy with the P&S produced some awesome work, nothing more to say, though I thought he was going to convert *everything* to B&W for a while.
The guy with the DSLR picked what to me would be the most difficult shots ever. Shooting in a call center!? I was much more impressed when he got indoors at the Lowry, and the best of his stuff by far was shot on the farm.

Overall a very enjoyable half hour. I'll be watching the rest of the series for sure.

Don't forget to push your red button too - theres a "tutorial" video section with tips & tricks from the pros on there. Currently it's about landscapes though it looks like it might change each week.

Thanks, I'll try and catch the repeat of the first one tomorrow and set Sky to catch the rest of the series, if it can find a series link.

Where does it say that? I couldn't find that sentence and have already submitted a few pics which break that rule, but I'm sure its not in the rules that I read? :S

Excellent, the rules page has changed (I copy-pasted that bit so I know I didn't dream it!). It was part of rule 4 which also said that panorama format shots were not allowed and non-conforming aspect ratios would definitely be rejected. They've softened the wording around that too.

Looks like I might submit a few after all.

It also states:

"Images submitted prior to, or after 2004 are ineligible. All photos must adhere to BS17863: EU directive G9b, para 14 and be accompanied by an adult. Photographs featuring interiors or areas exposed to the elements, moonshine, direct or direct sunlight will be rejected. Photographers are advised that their work must be of a creative nature and failure to demonstrate a 'wow' factor may result in your image being publicly derided during live or repeated TV broadcasts, across the internet of through a network of mobile loudhailers."

Should be good this.

Edit: almost forgot to mention my submission (although it breaks the exterior daylight rule):

Already entering pics for this but has anyone else noticed that there are some weird entries? There are pictures of London in the East Anglia group etc etc!! I think people are entering their photos in the area they live in not where they are taken!

The number of photos being entered is amazing! whoever wins on this will be very talented or VERY lucky!
