I am going in about 2 weeks on vacation. I need some help on what to see and where to go...
I live in Beaver PA, outside of Pittsburgh and will be traveling to Fort Wayne Indiana to see my brother in law. In tow will be my wife, 2 toddler types( 4.5 yrs and 20 months) and a handicapped mother in law.

While in Ft wayne we will get a tour of the GM assembly plant and my mother in law wants to see a corvette museum there.

The plan is to leave my mother in law with her son for 3 days or so and the rest of use take a few days vacation...So, where to go, what to see?
thoughts...in no particular order...
US Airforce museum in dayton Oh
the new Abraham Lilncoln museum in Springfield IL
Indianapolis Raceway Museum

Things that interest me; photography, trains, cars, planes, history.
The kids...the older one, cars maybe trains or planes. The younger one...she can't say.
My wife...no hobbies to speak of. she likes to write and can get bored at musuems, is confused by geography and believes history is over with. Perhaps dinner, a movie, scenery, lying on a beach would appeal to her.

SOOOO - what do you all think is out that way that is worth seeing? It is hard to find stuff on the net (the corvette museum i could not find via google...but it is there, a private one apparently) Staying in a hotel or a different one each night is fine. Driving is fine, but we (the wife mostly) don't want to spend the whole time driving or drive 5 hours to arrive at 8 am to see an all day attraction.

Input PLEASE!

Hey Prof,

Hope you have a great vacation! I know nothing about that area and so can't make any suggestions but the least I can do is give your thread a **bump**. What about it folks, does someone have any idea of "where to go, what to see in Indiana / Illinois / Ohio??

Well, with the planes and history link, you will absolutely love the USAF Museum at Wright Pat. It is by far one of my favorite museums in the world. I mean, where else can you see a XB-36 parked inside. I've been able to go there twice, and I want to go back again. Plan at least a full day there, and if you are really interested in planes, you could easily spend a couple of days.

Detroit's actually a very intersting town, and there's some lovely country just to the north of it as well. Plus it's right across the border from Canada, if you feel like going to Canada... Chicago's a great city for architecture. Been a LONG time since I have been to either place though.

If you do go to Detroit, make sure you go to Belle Isle. The wife would probably love the Garden and conservatory (& there's some really nice photo opps). The Detroit Zoo is also really nice - they have a wonderful polar bear exhibit and a really really neat butterfly house.

My brother (member Jewellian) lives in Detroit. PM him and he can fill you in on all the neat stuff to se & do if you're interested in heading over that way.

The Air Force museum in Dayton is free. You will pay a little for the whole family to ride (not control) a flight simulator, but the kids will love it. Also pay a little and go to the OmniMax theatre at the museum. The movie is short, but the experience is worth it. While in Dayton, go to the Carillon Park, a walk through village of the inventive history of Dayton. Outstanding exhibits of cars and trains and a riding minature train the kids will love. It used to be free too, but now charges a small fee. The Wright Brothers museum is next to their old home in Dayton and it is free also. It leaves you amazed at the accomplishment of flight and has lots of children oriented interactive exhibits.

Robt and Sara - Detroit, actuall Dearborn and the Ford stuff is on my list for later this year. Going there does not interest my wife, but for my birthday she told me to go with my friend..well that was December, not a fun time to sightsee. So that is later this summer.

Ron - Hmm..lots of stuff in Dayton. Not a flashy tourist destination, but certainly fascinating stuff.

Off to research Chicago. Was it in Chicago that they got the ribs in that episode of M*A*S*H?

I've never personally been to the Lilncoln museum in Springfield IL but I'd say it would be a ways out of your way. A good 4 hour drive from Indy. Plus there isnt much else there. And if you do go to springfield... make sure you dont take pictures of the smoke stacks off the main highway... the FBI just might show up on your doorstep... and yes... I speak from experience.

What is so special about the smokestacks? (this is where the rumors of genocide and US concentration camps starts, right?)

I have been chased from a prison entrance once...the only timne i have been chased. I have not tried to get any shots of the nuclear power plant nearby though.

Apparently the smoke stacks are part of a water treatment facility... which turned out to be a secure location. I guess my photos from a 1/4 mile away with my wide angle made me look suspicious?
