The 50mm f/1.8 is a lot faster and sharper than the 18-55 kit lens.
Question... When you say a lens is fast, what exactly are you speaking of? |

A fast lens collects more light than a slow lens. I am guessing the term fast was used because a fast lens allows you to use faster shutter speeds given the same lighting situation and ISO setting.
One "stop" faster allows twice as much light. So one stop faster in the lens could mean shooting at 1/60 vs 1/30sec given you are already at your top ISO speed.
The standard f-stops are f/1, f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, f/22, f/32, f/45 and f/64, but most SLRs also work in 1/2 or 1/3 stop increments.

Thanks for the additional info Nusbaum. One question though:
Originally posted by Nusbaum: You can learn the characteristics of a prime lens and then see the picture and position yourself without ever raising the camera to your eye. I'm sure this is possible with a zoom, but nothing seems has ever seems as intuitive as a prime for this type of shooting. |
What do you mean by that? That you soon get to learn the zoom so that you can guess the frame without looking through the viewfinder?
And another one: What does USM stand for? Noise (sound) reduction?

There is no zoom to learn, prime lenses don't zoom. What he meant was once you start using the prime you will realize how close you need to be to the subject to get the shot you want without having to look through the viewfinder.
You will eventually have a good feel for the distance you need to be from your subject to get the shot you want, since that is important since the prime lenses don't have zoom capabilities... they have a fixed focal length. As i've seen another poster say... you zoom with your feet. |

Ultra Sonic Motor - it is the motor that is used to power the focussing ring. Canon's USM lenses tend to be faster and quieter than those of other manufacturers. Canon does also make non-USM lenses, usually using DC motors, which are (audibly) noisier and slower to focus than their USM counterparts.
The 50mm 1.8 is not a USM lens (presumably one of the reasons why it is so cheap). However, the lack of USM does not seem to hinder this lens significantly - it is still fast to focus and not unnaturally loud (perhaps as a consequence of its small size).
The letters USM have dual role: it is also the acronym for "UnSharp Mask", which is a sharpening filter used in Photoshop.

Yeah, that's what confused me. Thanks for the info.
My father placed the order now. I cancelled my order at amazon.de and he placed a new one at a shop next to his office. Next week I'll be the proud owner of a Canon 350D with the kit lens, a Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM and the battery grip. The whole kit for 1075€. I'm glad I don't have to pay this right away.

I just checked the price of one of these little guys over here. R1000! 147.524 USD
DOUBLE the price
What a RIP-OFF! It's probably cheaper for me to buy it a BHPhoto and Video, ship it out here and pay the VAT and import duty! Come to think of it, that's probably what the photography store did... and then marked it up by +-35%.
Grr...I wanted this lense and I thought it would be a mere R400-R500 expense.
What's it going for in the UK? My sister is working out there so I might be able to save some cash.
