How do you crop an image and still retain the 640x480 dimensions? I had a heck of a time trying to crop my picture. It was oringinally 1280x960. I used Adobe Photodeluxe 3.0 and Paintshop Pro 6. What I wanted to do was basically select an area of the picture that would retain the dimensions and then resize that area to 640x480. However, I could never select an area that fit the dimensions exactly. What I ended up doing was distorting the image whenever I resized it to 640x480 (I had to turn off the automatic ratio or it would be something strange like 640x517, etc.) I hope my question is coherent.

I take my picture at the large setting then crop it then resize it to 640x480.

I use Photoshop, and it has a setting that lets you constrain the proportions of a selection as it's made, I just type in 4:3 or 3:4. Check to see if your software does something similar. If it doesn't, I've been known to get the most important dimesions of the area I'm interested in based on what I want from the image, then use a calculator to get the other dimension, and very carefully drag a selection box to that size. Of course, you can only do this if your software tells you how big your selection is as you make it. What a pain, huh?

Yeah, my software doesn't really tell me anything about pixel size, it is more designed for printing pictures. I tried cropping and resizing, but I couldn't keep the 4:3 ratio without distorting the picture (it looked like it was seen in a funhouse mirror)....darn included camera software
Thanks for your advice

i think photoshop elements can be had for really cheap and has most features of photoshop that most people who are not in publishing would need.

Thats right 9999, Elements is about a hunnerd bucks and Adobe supports it really well. I bought it as a stepping stone but doubt I'll need the larger version.
