I have been setting up some shots with borders by making a big border, and then doing the final aspect ratio crop using the marquee/selefction tool.
But aside from using the grid to center it, is there a quick way to get the marquee to snap to the center of the image?
In other words, I have a big black border around the photo, I want to use less, so I am cropping. But how do I center it perfectly?
I have PS CS (but I am currently on a trial license for CS2) |

If you hold down the ALT (PC) or OPT (Mac) key while you drag any marquee selection tool I think it centers on the starting point.
But from where you are starting, I'd simply use the Canvas Size command and make it the size you want -- by default it will trim the outside evenly. It gets trickier if you need to trim asymmetrically ... just say "OK" when it warns you it is cropping the image; you can always Undo ... |

Neil, not sure how to do the center portion, why would you not approach from the other direction? Take the image you have produced and then expand the canvas to the final dimension unchecking the relative option and entering the total pixels/inches as the final measurement, this would automatically center your image on the new background canvas.

Try using the guides. I've only used them with objects, not the marquee, but it may work for that too. To create a guide click outside the image (but within the images window) or on the ruler if you display that and drag the cursor into the image. You'll see a line appear (this is the guide) and it will be placed wherever you release your mouse button (it's generally best to have the rulers displayed so you know what the center is). Then make sure snap to guides is enabled (same place as snap to grid) and it should work just like snapping to the grid only you'll be snapping to that single line now... |

Thanks for everyone's responses.
My photos were already bigger than the target size, and I was just trying this visual way, and I liked the ease with which you could visually crop the photo and border (with a fixed aspect ratio set), and then reduce to the final size. But I realize that there are a lot of things wrong with that (for example, you are reducing the inner border at the same time, and if you get into odd pixel widths, it's uneven).
Still, it just surprises me that there's no "align center" command!
Edit: Another Example. Suppose I want to make my photo smaller (no border). I just want to trim around all the sizes, evenly. How do I center the crop? (That's again why I think PS should have a center command!)

1. select -> all
2. edit -> transform selection -> scale (type in 70% widt and height, for example)
3. click OK
4. image -> crop
voila!

Ever tried Layers/Align to Selection/Horizontal(or Vertical)Centers? I tried a Select All and then tried it, and after doing both...right in the middle. ????
Do you have a template already set up and dragging (Move Tool) photos to it? If that is so..hold Shift as you do and it will put it dead center
