Took these the other day.

Both are uncropped. Slight levels adjustments to fix a slight gray tint in the background. USM and bordering applied.

Mostly just to share, but comments welcome.

Oh, you have outdone yourself with these precious images!

Thank you very much!

Cheryl - I pretty much just stand outside by the feeder (our house is in the bg so that's how I wound up with the white bg in the pic), and stand there, and stand there...until one comes along. I make sure I see them buzzing around before I go stand there. Then it's just a lot of patience waiting for them. Also, it helps to wear a red shirt if you have one. I didn't wear one this time, though.

Brian - Thanks!

Fritz - Yes, I think you're right.

Kylie - You crack me up. :-) Thank you.

Nice thing about these is:

They are not flying, a fresh look at humming birds
There is no red feeder full of sugar water intruding.

Very nice shots.

I'm jealous!

Have never been able to shoot a hummingbird sitting still.
Come to think of it, never shot a hummingbird to begin with.

Shooting text like that I'm sure I could do though...LOL

Hey, I have some shots that meet those criteria! And I spent so long trying to catch one in flight/hovering ... : (

Good detail on these shots, even getting a catchlight on the eye. Well done!

Ron - Thank you very much. You're right, usually I have no choice but to shoot with the feeder in the way. I'm very happy with these.

Brad - All of these were taken less than a foot away with my Nikon Coolpix 775. They aren't the best, but pretty darn good considering the camera! I tried to catch one in my hand and had actually grabbed him but as soon as he fluttered I lost him. Still jealous? :-D :-D j/k ;-)

Rob - Haven't needed to try that yet. ;-)

Paul - Thanks! I've also tried to get one in flight but haven't caught anything decent. I'm not sure my shutter of 1/4000 can get the results I would want. I think they flutter so fast that there would still be motion blur.

Thanks again everyone.

Very Nice!
I have them at my backyard feeder but more often in the evening.
More likley I am not around in the day and its been very overcast and rainy on the weekends around here!

They seem to like the sugar water extra sweet this year! They also come in pairs quite often, I have yet to get both in a photo though.Getting the sugar water mixture right is the key to attracting them!
Yours are excellent, Jen!!

Those are amazing Hummer shots! The white background is great, and I especially like the phenomenal silhouettes you posted on smugmug. You'll have to put a few here so people can favorite them! By coincidence, I captured some of these critters just this morning...

Bump for the day crowd. Don't miss Jen's other hummingbird shots if you haven't seen them!

Shannon, that was so nice of you! Thank you!

Beautiful shots you took! The third one, in mid-flight, is really terrific. Great job. I left you some comments. :-)

Oooh... I found another one. I was really hoping the male would show up, but I think she might have been a bachelorette.

Not that I can compare to Jen's artistic exposures but I can't help but chime in. Three of these were my first at ISO 1600.

OK, one shameless bump since I posted so late last night. But don't forget to take a look at Jen's opening shots.

ButterflySis, those are lovely hummingbird shots. I like the white background. It really shows them off.

Here are a few shots I got in Costa Rica. There were so many kinds of hummingbirds it was amazing. Unfortunately I have the ugly feeders in the shots.
