Turns out one of my customers at the diner owns a recording label. He approached me the other day and asked if I could take some pictures of a couple of his bands. The first set would be used for a promo packet, the second for the CD label art. If I work this right it will lead to more work.

The question is how much do I charge him? He's my current strategy -

I can do all the shots at the same time. I need a simple tasteful one for the promo pack. I was thinking for this of charging $200. For the CD art we discussed my being paid in "points". My thought is that a 2-point (AKA 2%) rate would be good (that comes out to about a dime for every CD). My estimate is that for every 1000 CDs they sell I would get $100. As the band is not known I may well not make much, but the $200 covers my afternoon of shooting.

What do ya'll think? Am I over or undercharging?

Depends on the band. I would love to have had 2% of the beatles record sales. But A little known local band making there first ablum is often lucky to sell 500. But at one time the beatles were little known as well. So maybe split the difference 1 point and a $100. I did a cover peice recently I charged them $300 and gave them full rights and privliges to the photo in its unaltered state. I had little faith in the band this is there second album but the first on never sold 300 copies. I have usualy based my price off of what a Gig would pay them. I figured that if they charged a club $300 for a show then one days pay would be a fair price for them to pay you for a photo shoot.

I really like your idea of basing the price of the shoot off the pay of a gig. That is great.

As for your idea of taking cash instead of points, I see your logic, but will likely stick with the points thing. Why? For the same stupid reason I play the lottery - which in my mind exactly what this is.

Still, based on your suggestion I may up the price of shooting the promo pack piece just to help further cover my costs. And, to boot, I will likely get the band to sign off on the rights for their images on all of this. It would be nice to have rights to the posters if they went somewhere.

Hey, you may call me a dreamer, but I am not the only one.

Thanks for your input!
