This rather large bird has been around my house the last few days. He seems to like the dead stump outside my dining room window. I believe it is a woodpecker - i would just love to get one of him in flight - he has these white feathers on his wings that look really cool.

A Pileated Woodpecker. Large and rather rare. They love old stumps with carpenter ants.

They're not too rare in Vermont. I see pileated peckers quite often when I go hiking. :)

Well, rare in that they have a very large territory so you don't see many. They require large mature forests.

If you are interested in doing it Chris, hang a couple of suet feeders in the trees nearby and you can probably keep him in the area for good. I have at least two pileated woodpeckers that visit my yard several times a day. You can buy the feeders and the suet packages at Wal-Mart. |

I was not all that happy with my pics (some from a rapidly opened window and some from my back deck.). Any attempt to move closer or to get a better angle scared him off.
Then i saw the pics here. Mine are better than these! And not too far off of these.
Since he has been showing up in the morning, tomorrow i'll be ready for him!

I've had a tough time capturing a pileated, too. They're pretty shy. This is the best I've been able to get-
Smaller woodpeckers seem to be more willing to pose-

What 'flavor' do they like? I had one of these in my yard once but can't seem to get him to return. I live in a mature forest and can hear them from time to time.

Besides suet they love crunchy peanut butter. |

Thanks Harv, first contest I've ever won in my life :)
As to suet, I use the plain and also the peanut (sounds like an M&M commercial)! You can also get some with sunflower and other seeds mixed in. That will draw tons more birds, and the woodpeckers will still eat it up too. One thing, if you do get the pileated woodpecker to the feeder, he'll demolish that suet cake in a day or so.... that bit 'pecker can do the damage! |

I haven't seen this one since taking this photo. Must have scared him, I guess.
Nice captures! |

I stopped along side the river at a small camping/conservation area for a break from riding over the weekend and just happened across this guy. Both are 100% crops.

The woodpecker returned..i was working on removing the dead stump yeaterday, but today at lunch time he was back!
this time i got a shot of him on teh wing...hard to do as without getting a focus lock the camera did not want to fire, and with a 70-300mm lens and hanging out a window it was not easy, but i got one!
Here are some quickies, editing and upload wise...

These are all just great shots of a great looking bird.
Not sure if their rare judging from all of them here.
In Oregon they're pretty common. Pretty large birds too.
